Chapter 82: Extra 2
Miao He, in this world, is a sub-beast of the fox breed. He has reddish curly hair, orange-red furry ears, and a fluffy big tail. The tail is also beautifully orange-red with a touch of white. At first, Miao He was not accustomed to having this prominent half-person-tall tail, whether sitting or lying down.
His face is also exceptionally delicate, not losing out to the well-endowed Chun. The slightly upturned eyes give off a hint of allure, but the chubby lips add an innocent and cute touch. After arriving here, Miao He unconsciously developed a habit of hugging his tail and looking at the tribe’s orcs with a quiet and sorrowful expression, making several males feel uneasy under his gaze.
Miao He just wanted to see if there was anyone who might be Yang Dalang. Maybe someone was carefully hidden in the tribe, or if not now, then perhaps tomorrow. However, the one he observed the most was still Mo, whom he suspected before. Mo was seen every day working closely with Chun in the village.
Recently, Chun proposed the idea of building earthen houses in the village. First, they would frame the structure with wooden strips and then plaster it with mud. Chun guaranteed that these houses would be warmer and sturdier than leather tents. The chief, Hui, was noncommittal and only said to build one as a trial, which was considered approval. So, a group of males, whenever not hunting, gathered around Chun’s new house, helping out or just watching.
Miao He also came several days in a row, adding to the people watching.
The tribe now spread the word that He probably regretted breaking up with Mo and came here every day to pester him, which was extremely annoying, even though Miao He never approached anyone to talk.
Some sub-beasts close to Chun even came to Miao He one day to chase him away. “Are you not tired of this?! Do you have to come here and cause trouble to feel happy?! How can someone be as dark-hearted as you?! It’s so annoying!”
Miao He glanced at them and silently moved away.
He walked to a tree further away, thinking that no one would drive him away here. But as he approached, he found the tribe chief standing by the sturdy tree trunk. The chief had his arms crossed, also watching from a distance.
Miao He was slightly stunned, wondering if he had stumbled upon something he shouldn’t know. He had heard from Meng before that the chief was quite concerned about Chun. Could it be… the chief also had feelings for Chun?
Anyway, greetings were still necessary. Miao He hugged his tail tightly, “Hello, Chief.”
“Is your injury healed?” Hui lowered his eyes and asked indifferently.
“Yes.”
“Join the team tomorrow when you’re better.”
In the tribe, they mainly rely on orcs going out to hunt for food. A trip can take several days. During this period, sub-beasts, females, or injured males must form teams to gather fruits and vegetables near the settlement. It can be said that those in the village without injuries or illnesses must work to eat.
Miao He nodded, “Okay.”
Hui said nothing more and seemed to plan to leave. At this moment, a particularly loud cheer erupted in the distance!
It immediately drew the attention of both Miao He and Hui.
From afar, it seemed that Chun’s new house was finally completed. Everyone was cheering and celebrating.
However, for some reason, Chun and Mo, who were in the crowd receiving congratulations, suddenly held hands and walked toward Miao He. The people around them cheered again.
Miao He was still puzzled but a bit curious.
By then, Mo and Chun had approached. It turned out they were there to see the chief.
Neither of them glanced at Miao He. Chun, blushing, glanced at Mo, who quietly returned the look. That expression indeed resembled Yang Dalang’s repressed look when Miao He first met him, making Miao He stare at them with big eyes.
Then Mo spoke, “Chun and I have agreed that once the house is built, we will become partners. Chief, please give us your blessing.”
Next to him, Chun shyly lowered his head.
Their friends and family who had followed cheered for them.
“Good job, Mo!! That’s how it should be!!”
“Tch, Chun is in high demand now; you’re lucky, you leopard!!”
“Yeah!! If Mo hadn’t married, I might have been tempted, hahaha!!”
The chief looked at Chun for a moment, then nodded at Mo. “Alright. Report to the shaman.”
Mo finally smiled and then pulled Chun away.
As they turned to leave, Chun seemed to glance at Miao He unintentionally.
Miao He didn’t notice. His heart was full of disappointment and struggle.
He couldn’t help but wonder, if Dalang came later, would he be able to recognize him?
Hugging his furry tail, Miao He buried his whole face in it.
He didn’t even know when the chief next to him left.

After that, life in the village went on day by day.
Nothing to be happy about, nothing worth noting.
As most of the village’s tents were replaced with earthen houses, only Miao He’s wasn’t. Several males wanting to court Miao He offered to help build one, but he shook his head and refused. He spoke so little that he could count on one hand the number of times he spoke in a day.
Days passed, and the weather gradually turned cold.
Miao He’s expectations were frozen with the cold air.
Meng, seeing his friend’s condition, sighed repeatedly. “In a few days, it will be the day of Mo and Chun’s oath. He, you should let go. There are definitely better males than Mo.”
Miao He didn’t bother to explain, continuing to wash wild vegetables with his head down. There were many baskets of wild vegetables at his feet, collected over the past few days. The village had a division of labor: some washed, some cut, and some cooked. Cooking in large pots saved fuel and firewood. In the cold weather, the hard work of washing vegetables had somehow been left to Miao He by those who considered themselves righteous.
Meng, unable to stand it, often came to help. Seeing Miao He’s state, he crouched down to help wash.
Miao He turned his head and finally smiled apologetically. “Thank you.”
He realized he had been too self-centered, worrying his original body’s friends more than before.
But it was also Dalang’s pampering, Mantou and Wotou often said.
Their two sons, after growing up, loved to tease him and Yang Dalang. For many things, like suddenly craving watermelon slush or spicy pickled vegetables, if he accidentally mentioned it, the whole household would be in chaos. Though everyone got to eat something delicious afterward, it didn’t stop Mantou and Wotou from teasing him and Dalang.
Thinking of these things, perhaps in the future, he could only live on fragments of memories.
As Miao He gradually accepted his current situation, he felt it was fine.
The more he lived, the more he thought about them, as if they were with him.
However, Miao He, who was muddling through life, had always ignored the differences in this strange world.
Just a few days before Chun and Mo’s oath, the tribe’s elderly shaman suddenly gathered the tribe and announced something.
“According to the divination, the omnipresent Beast God will soon send an avatar to help the Beast Tribe, and it will happen in the coming days. Our tribe must send someone to the Sacred Mountain to offer body and soul; otherwise, disaster will befall our tribe!”
Upon hearing this, the faces of the orcs present turned grim.
Entering the Sacred Mountain alone was a significant challenge, not to mention offering one’s body and soul to the avatar, which essentially meant a sacrificial offering. Although it wouldn’t cruelly cost the offering their life, there was always a saying that the life essence of a sacrificial offering would be greatly diminished, shortening their lifespan considerably.
The shaman looked at everyone sternly, “So, come forward and draw lots.”
A sub-beast reluctantly protested in a low voice, “Shaman, the hunting team isn’t back yet; such an important matter can’t be decided so hastily without the chief…”
The shaman coldly looked at the person, “Even if the hunting team were here, they wouldn’t need to draw lots. With winter coming, do you still think we have enough people for the hunting team?”
A harsh but realistic truth. Those who provided the most value were prioritized.
The sub-beast could only close his mouth. Miao He, at this time, also learned from Meng about this divine matter.
When it was Miao He’s turn, he hesitated briefly and then reached out to draw.
“Also white!” Meng, who had drawn a white lot too, quietly cheered for Miao He.
This meant they weren’t chosen as offerings. They were safe!
However, as fate would have it, the one who drew the red lot, indicating the offering, was Chun, who was to take an oath in a few days.
Holding the lot, Chun’s face turned pale, filled with disbelief.
“This can’t be right, it’s not possible… No way, it wasn’t supposed to be like this…”
No one understood what Chun was muttering, but Mo bit his lip and stepped forward. “Shaman, let me go in Chun’s place.”
Chun’s eyes lit up with joy and gratitude, but he shook his head repeatedly. “No! How can I let you go for me? You’re still injured; going to the Sacred Mountain would be dangerous. I… I know some ways to take care of myself, I can definitely come back safely!”
Upon mentioning methods, Chun’s friends realized and tried to help “Yes, methods! Shaman, Chun has taught the village so many useful methods recently, and you’ve praised him highly. Shouldn’t he be exempt from drawing lots like the hunting team members?”
With this, several voices joined in agreement, all Chun’s friends. The shaman hesitated. Indeed, Chun had made many contributions to the tribe. It would be unfair to turn a blind eye now.
As the shaman pondered, Chun’s friend Ya, feeling upset that Meng and He were just standing by as if watching a show, spoke out, “Don’t forget, there are also some beasts raised by the tribe. Shouldn’t they also repay the tribe at this time?”
This statement caused an uproar! There were not just a few beasts raised by the tribe. Hunting often resulted in casualties, and it was natural for the tribe to take care of the bereaved families.
“Ya! What do you mean by that?! Are you saying we owe you?! What about our relatives who never returned from hunting?! Shouldn’t the tribe repay us too?! How could you think like this!!”
In the heated noise, Miao He suddenly shouted, “I’ll go!”
A single sentence effectively quieted everyone.
Meng anxiously pulled Miao He, “What are you saying?!”
The shaman was surprised, even Chun.
Mo’s gaze fell squarely on his former partner for the first time.
“I’m not talking nonsense. I want to go.”
If he went, could he find Dalang faster? With such divine presence, he wanted to plead.
***
The next day, Miao He was taken by the tribe to the foot of the Sacred Mountain. From there, he had to walk alone. The shaman told him not to worry about getting lost, as the god would guide him. However, what the shaman didn’t say was that if the god was displeased with the offering, they might never find their way.
Miao He listened in a daze. Wrapped in a thick fur cloak, he stepped into the mountain.
At this moment, even Mo couldn’t help but call out, “He…”
Miao He didn’t turn back. After so long, he had given up finding Dalang in Mo.
He decided to try a different way.
Two days later, when Chief Hui returned with the hunting team, he furiously confronted the shaman!
“I said I would be back in time! Why did you send someone?!”
The old shaman lowered his eyes. “The leader of the tribe must not be weakened.”
All his considerations were for the tribe’s best interest.
Hui’s face darkened, and suddenly his body transformed! He became a majestic white tiger as tall as a person’s shoulder, with beautiful, fierce black stripes on his silver-white fur. His gray beast eyes coldly looked at the shaman, let out a low growl, and then swiftly ran towards the Sacred Mountain.
The shaman closed his eyes, unwavering in his belief.
He was convinced that everything was done according to the Beast God’s instructions, and he was not wrong.
When Hui finally found him, Miao He lay beside a towering sacred tree, wrapped in fur and burning with fever.
“Da… Dalang… It’s so cold…”
