“I’m going to Xuezhou’s house,” Chen Xu said, feeling uneasy after the abrupt disconnection of the phone call.
“What’s wrong?” Si Ye, noticing Chen Xu’s troubled expression, held his hand and asked.
“Aunt seems mentally unstable. Xuezhou was terrified when he called me, and then the call suddenly cut off,” Chen Xu explained with a furrowed brow. Si Ye also sensed that something was amiss.
“Take two bodyguards with you,” Si Ye said, not wanting Chen Xu to go alone. He instructed Secretary Jiang to send two bodyguards along with Chen Xu.
Upon arriving at Xuezhou’s residential area, the security guards didn’t let them in since they weren’t registered. Chen Xu called Xuezhou several times before he finally answered.
“Help—”
Hearing this, the security guard quickly opened the gate. The property management also rushed to Xuezhou’s home to help Chen Xu open the door.
Entering the house, they didn’t see Xuezhou or Luo Yi. Chen Xu hurried upstairs to Xuezhou’s room. The door was hacked to pieces, looking like a crime scene.
“Mr. Lin, please wait,” the bodyguard said, blocking Chen Xu and leading the way cautiously.
When they reached the bathroom, they saw Luo Yi, who had hacked the bathroom door, fighting with Xuezhou. Although she had a knife, she was exhausted from hacking through two doors, and Xuezhou barely managed to subdue her.
Both Xuezhou and Luo Yi were drenched, and there was blood on the floor, though it was unclear whose it was.
“Brother…” Upon seeing Chen Xu, Xuezhou finally relaxed, tears streaming down his face.
His mother kept struggling in his grip, and the bodyguards quickly tied her up.
Exhausted, Xuezhou collapsed onto the floor.
Chen Xu took off his jacket and draped it over Xuezhou, “It’s okay now.”
Xuezhou, trembling, leaned on Chen Xu’s shoulder, realizing he had narrowly escaped being killed by his mother.
The police soon arrived and took Luo Yi away. Si Yaowei arrived shortly after, shocked that such an incident had happened in just a day.
Xuezhou, with red-rimmed eyes, looked to his father for comfort, but to his surprise, his father scolded him, blaming him for provoking his mother and calling the police on her.
Chen Xu couldn’t stand it anymore. Xuezhou, choking with emotion, questioned Si Yaowei, “Dad, am I really your son? Mom tried to kill me! She wanted my life! I almost died! She’s your wife, but am I not your son? If you didn’t want children, why have me in the first place?”
Feeling guilty, Si Yaowei mumbled, “You’re fine now, aren’t you? You know your mother’s health isn’t good. If it weren’t for giving birth to you, she wouldn’t be ill. You’re so ungrateful.”
Xuezhou felt as if he were drowning, ready to be submerged at any moment.
“Fine, then just think I’m ungrateful.” Xuezhou packed a few clothes, grabbed his phone and keys, and left.
“Brother, can you give me a ride?” Xuezhou, now having the house Si Ye had given him, didn’t need to stay and endure this.
Chen Xu readily agreed, “Can you stay by yourself? Or come back to the main house for a while. But today, Si Lin had a car accident, and Si Ye and I might not be able to take care of you.”
“What? Si Lin had a car accident?!” Xuezhou, absorbed in his own sorrow, was suddenly alarmed by the news, forgetting his negative emotions.
“Yeah, around noon today,” Chen Xu said, directing the driver to take them home. Given Xuezhou’s current state, he was unfit to stay alone, especially after being chased by his mother with a knife.
“Around noon?” Xuezhou frowned.
“What’s wrong?” Chen Xu noticed his thoughtful expression.
Xuezhou hesitated, “My mom also started acting out after receiving a call around noon.”
“It just seems like bad things are happening all at once.”
Unlike Xuezhou’s simple observation, Chen Xu sensed something off. How could it be such a coincidence?
Propping his chin with one hand, he asked Xuezhou, “Did your mom start acting unstable after Si Lin’s banquet?”
Xuezhou thought for a moment, “Around that time, yeah.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Chen Xu had a suspicion but needed more evidence to confirm it.
After dropping Xuezhou at the main house, Chen Xu asked the kitchen to prepare some easily digestible food and went upstairs to take a shower.
“Xiao Ze, how are things over there?” Zhuo Shunan and Lin Penghan were on a video call with Chen Xu, concern evident on their faces.
“Si Ye is still at the hospital. I came back home for a bit. Si Lin is still in critical condition,” Chen Xu said, drying his short hair with a towel while keeping the video call on.
Seeing Chen Xu so casually in front of them made Zhuo Shunan and Lin Penghan happy.
“Good people have their own luck; Si Lin will be fine. Remember to eat and rest well, you and Si Ye both. Don’t exhaust yourselves,” Zhuo Shunan advised earnestly.
“Okay.” Chen Xu chatted with them for a while before saying goodbye.
Before hanging up, Chen Xu saw Lin Penghan’s eager expression, realizing his anticipation.
“Goodbye, Mom and Dad.”
The couple’s faces immediately lit up with smiles.
“Alright, alright, goodbye, Xiao Ze.”
Ending the call, the couple looked radiant. “Xiao Ze called me Dad just now.”
“Xiao Ze called me Mom before he left today,” Zhuo Shunan boasted.
“That’s because I wasn’t there, so you got the first call,” Lin Penghan retorted, feeling competitive.
Lin Yirun, entering just then, overheard his parents talking about their video call with his brother, and how Xiao Ze called them Mom and Dad, felt a pang of jealousy.
His brother hadn’t called him ‘brother’ yet!
But remembering how he had upset Xiao Ze enough to warrant a serious talk, Lin Yirun realized that day might be far off.
Chen Xu brought dinner to the hospital for Si Ye, who was discussing Si Lin’s accident with Secretary Jiang.
“The driver was indeed fatigued. There’s no large sum of money in his account, so it seems to be an accident,” Secretary Jiang reported.
So far, the only person who might want to harm Si Lin would be Si Wanping, but she had been behaving recently, focusing on taking care of Si Shenqian. If she were behind it and deliberately visited the hospital today, it would be too obvious.
If not her, and not Si Yaoxian, then who? Could it really be just an accident?
“Let’s eat first,” Chen Xu suggested, holding up the food container.
Seeing him, Si Ye’s icy demeanor softened into a smile, and warmth returned to his eyes.
“You should go eat too,” Si Ye told Secretary Jiang.
After Jiang left, Chen Xu and Si Ye ate dinner together.
“How is Xuezhou?” Si Ye asked, concerned about Chen Xu’s errand.
Chen Xu, planning to discuss the issue, recounted the events to Si Ye.
“Aunt isn’t just suffering from postpartum depression; she’s completely lost it,” Chen Xu remarked. Luo Yi’s behavior with the knife didn’t fit typical depression.
Si Ye, taking a sip of soup, replied, “I’m not sure either. I’ve never heard of Aunt losing control like this.”
The Si family only gathered for holidays or major events, so Si Ye wasn’t familiar with Luo Yi.
“I need to tell you something.” Chen Xu wiped his mouth, his expression serious.
Si Ye instinctively set down his bowl to listen.
“Xuezhou said his mom received a call around noon before she started acting out. Her condition has been deteriorating since Si Lin’s banquet,” Chen Xu explained, looking intently at Si Ye.
“But Aunt and Si Lin have no conflicts of interest. No matter who inherits the Si family, the third house gets their share,” Si Ye mused, finding the coincidences troubling but unable to pinpoint the connection.
“There might be something we don’t know. You should investigate Aunt,” Chen Xu suggested.
“Alright.” Si Ye nodded slightly.
They stayed at the hospital until 2 a.m. Si Lin received another critical condition notice but was saved in the end. Exhausted, Si Ye held Chen Xu, letting him rest in his arms.
Three days later, Si Lin was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward.
During this time, the Sun family visited, demanding an explanation. Old Master Sun accused the Si family of not only harming Sun Keting but now targeting her only child.
“Actually, I wanted to discuss your family’s actions. These are the records from Si Lin’s phone. Sun Pangfei instigated him to fight for the Si family, driving a wedge between us. His last call before the accident was with you,” Si Ye stated, making the Sun family turn pale.
The records included messages implicating Old Master Sun in encouraging Si Lin.
“I’ve warned you before about greed. It seems your family didn’t take my words seriously,” Si Ye said. Without Sun family interference, Si Lin wouldn’t have gone to the nursing home or had the accident.
“From now on, the Sun family need not associate with the Si family,” Si Ye declared, causing the Sun family to despair. They tried to salvage the situation, but Si Ye had them thrown out by bodyguards.
A week later, Si Lin woke up, though intermittently. Finally, Si Ye felt a bit of relief, knowing his brother’s bloodline was preserved.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Luo Yi yielded shocking results. Si Ye and Chen Xu were stunned to learn that Si Xuezhou’s biological mother, Luo Yi, was once the girlfriend of Si Ye’s older brother, Si Jinwen.
