When Ren Zhouyuan returned home, Fan Wenfeng had already brought An An back. As soon as he opened the door, An An rushed over to him, nearly knocking him over.
“You’re finally back,” Fan Wenfeng said, walking out from the living room. He looked relieved. “Your son has asked me at least twenty times today when you’d be back.”
Ren Zhouyuan laughed as he picked up An An, feeling a wave of joy wash over him at seeing his son’s face. He kissed An An and said, “Did you behave while I was away? I need to hear from Uncle Wenfeng first.”
An An’s eyes lit up with happiness as he hugged Ren Zhouyuan tightly and exclaimed, “I didn’t misbehave!”
The three of them happily ate a home-cooked meal together. During dinner, Fan Wenfeng kept teasing An An, recounting how much he missed his father and how he had bet An An couldn’t call Ren Zhouyuan. An An laughed, hugged Ren Zhouyuan, and refused to let go.
Ren Zhouyuan shot a grateful look at Fan Wenfeng. He had asked Fan Wenfeng to keep An An busy so he wouldn’t have to take any calls from An An in front of Leonid. Thanks to Fan Wenfeng’s help, An An hadn’t pestered him once.
After Fan Wenfeng left, Ren Zhouyuan didn’t need An An to cling to him. He carried An An to the bathroom, feeling as though they hadn’t seen each other in ages, even though it had only been two days. For the rest of the evening, they were inseparable, with Ren Zhouyuan even carrying An An on his back at one point. When it was time for bed, they playfully kissed each other goodnight, making An An giggle with delight.
The next morning, they were just as reluctant to part. At the kindergarten gate, An An pouted, not wanting to go in, while Ren Zhouyuan, feeling just as heartbroken, didn’t want to let him go. Teacher Chen watched them with a mixture of amusement and helplessness, reminding them that class was about to start.
Ren Zhouyuan felt empty as he left the kindergarten. Halfway to work, he realized he had another problem waiting for him at the office. He trudged to the company with a heavy heart, only to find that Leonid wasn’t there.
“Is the boss out on a business trip?” Ren Zhouyuan asked Ron, surprised. Leonid was almost always in the office unless he was traveling. Considering they had just returned from the base yesterday, it was unusual for him to be absent today. Although the thought of not having to face Leonid gave him some relief, he also felt an inexplicable sense of unease.
Ron, lazily playing on his phone, replied, “He went out. If things go smoothly, he should be back in a couple of hours. But who knows, he might not come back at all today.”
Ron’s dismissive tone made Ren Zhouyuan curious, but he simply replied with an “Oh” and went back to his work.
Meanwhile, Leonid was lurking near An An’s kindergarten, sneakily watching like a thief. After hearing so much about An An from Ren Zhouyuan the previous day, he couldn’t resist asking Ron to pull up Ren Zhouyuan’s details and then drove over to the kindergarten himself. Ron had teased him endlessly about it.
Although he didn’t see An An at first, he noticed Ren Zhouyuan’s friend leaving the house late at night, leading him to stay in his car all night, filled with worry and suspicion. By morning, he was relieved to see the pair together, his heart filled with warmth as he followed them to the kindergarten.
Leonid’s heart softened as he watched An An earnestly following the teacher’s movements during morning exercises. An An stood out, being slightly taller than his peers and with his distinctly foreign features. Leonid couldn’t take his eyes off him, filled with pride and affection.
He followed An An’s class to their room and watched through the window as An An immediately took out his mini-drone and started tinkering. Leonid marveled at the boy’s focus and skill, proud of the evident connection they shared.
As time passed, Leonid became increasingly distressed by An An’s isolation. Despite his own reserved nature, it pained him to see An An alone while other children played together. He wondered if Ren Zhouyuan was aware of this and felt a surge of helplessness and frustration at not being able to do anything.
Leonid returned to his car with a heavy heart, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. It took him a long time to calm down before heading back to the office, arriving just before noon.
As the elevator doors opened, Ren Zhouyuan looked up and their eyes met. The intense look on Leonid’s face made Ren Zhouyuan’s heart skip a beat, wondering if Leonid was angry.
Leonid hesitated as he passed Ren Zhouyuan’s desk but then continued to his office, calling Ron in as he entered.
Ron sighed, put down his phone, and followed, while Ren Zhouyuan felt a pang of discomfort watching them. He felt oddly isolated, a familiar sense of unease creeping back into his heart.
But as he turned away, he reminded himself that maintaining this distance was for the best. The proper space between him and Leonid was crucial to keep everything in balance.
