Chapter 17

The scar-faced man was named Hei Sen. According to him, he was a ruthless and cold-blooded killer, someone who wouldn’t blink while taking a life. Yet, he was defeated in an unforeseen twist by a seemingly insignificant Chu Shiye.

“Since you’ve beaten me, I’ll reluctantly acknowledge you,” he said.

Although Hei Sen spoke loudly, he avoided meeting Ji Mian’s gaze.

“Our boss has heard of your reputation and wants to meet you,” he continued.

Ji Mian asked, “Black Snake?”

Hei Sen snorted, “Exactly.”

Ji Mian responded indifferently, “I don’t have time.”

Chu Shiye turned his head slightly, sensing subtle changes in Ji Mian’s tone and demeanor—something seemed different from before.

Hei Sen’s eyes widened. “Who do you think you are?”

Ji Mian sneered, “And who do you think you are?”

Chu Shiye: “…”

Hei Sen inexplicably stepped back, fear evident in his eyes.

“Hmph, our boss has too many things to deal with right now to bother with you,” Hei Sen said. “But soon, when the boss beckons, you won’t have a choice but to come!”

Ji Mian: “Get lost.”

Hei Sen: “Don’t push me too far! … Fine, I’ll leave!”

With that, he turned and ran.

Chu Shiye: “…”

Chu Shiye: “Is that supposed to be me?”

“More or less,” Ji Mian said after some thought. “Not exactly the same, but close enough.”

Chu Shiye: “…”

“Alright,” Chu Shiye replied.

Ji Mian chuckled lightly and said, “Dealing with people like him, speaking nicely doesn’t work. You have to be fiercer than them to scare them away.”

“Later, if Black Snake causes any more trouble, you don’t need to step in—I’ll handle it.”

“Hey, you brat!”

A loud shout and a scream from ahead drowned out Ji Mian’s words. Both he and Chu Shiye turned to look.

The previously departing Hei Sen had suddenly ducked into a side alley and dragged out a young boy. “Didn’t your parents teach you that only bugs hide in gutters to eavesdrop?!”

The boy, held by the collar and dangling in midair, was none other than Ye Tiancai. He struggled continuously and was infuriated by Hei Sen’s accusation. “Who’s eavesdropping?! Do you know who I am? I’m the young master of the Ye family!”

Hei Sen sneered, “What the hell is the Ye family? Never heard of it!”

Ye Tiancai: “You!”

He glared fiercely.

Mental Suppression!

Hei Sen’s body trembled but quickly recovered. Being a C-level combat ability user with considerable strength, he wasn’t easily affected by the mental attack of the still-underaged Ye Tiancai.

However, Hei Sen’s expression changed. He realized that the boy was a potential threat.

After a brief moment of consideration, Hei Sen raised his other hand, his fingers claw-like, hovering over Ye Tiancai’s head.

Ye Tiancai, realizing his mental suppression had failed again, trembled and said, “W-What are you doing?”

Hei Sen’s tone deepened. “Blame yourself for not knowing your place. In your next life, remember—”

“Let him go.”

A calm voice drifted over, accompanied by a few raindrops that sent a chill down their spines.

Hei Sen froze, his body stiff, and turned around in a daze. Ye Tiancai also managed to see the person behind him.

A pale, handsome young man stood under an umbrella, his gaze not even landing on Ye Tiancai.

Ye Tiancai: “…”

Hei Sen: “What is he to you?”

Ji Mian: “Nothing.”

Hei Sen: “Then why—”

Ji Mian: “Let him go.”

Hei Sen: “…”

Damn it!

Hei Sen shot Ye Tiancai a fierce glare before throwing him to the ground, splashing a puddle of rainwater.

Covered in mud and water, Ye Tiancai scrambled to his feet, watching as Hei Sen quickly disappeared into the crowd. Then, he turned toward Ji Mian.

“I… I won’t thank you!” he declared.

Ji Mian didn’t even glance at him. He rotated the umbrella slightly and walked away without hesitation, as if Ye Tiancai didn’t even exist.

Ye Tiancai: “…”

“Young Master, are you alright?”

From the end of the street, several people hurried over, shielding Ye Tiancai with umbrellas and using their own clothes to wipe the mud from him.

Noticing Ye Tiancai staring after the departing figure, one of them whispered in his ear, “We’ve already carried out your instructions. Tomorrow morning, someone will be lying in ambush on the school’s main route.”

Ye Tiancai snapped, “What instructions?”

The man rubbed his hands together with a sly laugh. “Didn’t you say you wanted to teach that unruly teacher a lesson? So we—”

Ye Tiancai yelled, “Idiot! When did I ever say that?! Dismiss those people, and get out of my sight!”

The rain began to ease as Chu Shiye folded his umbrella and took Ji Mian’s from him. “Hei Sen must be from another planet.”

Most areas of this planet were uninhabitable, and the population of a few tens of thousands was mostly concentrated in the city. For locals, the Ye family was a household name.

Since Hei Sen had no idea about the Ye family, nor did locals recognize him, he was undoubtedly from another planet.

Still, this C-level ability user was, as they had guessed, one of Black Snake’s subordinates.

“Is Black Snake recruiting people?” Ji Mian asked. “Not only seeking help from elsewhere but also looking for you.”

Chu Shiye replied, “It’s possible.”

He hadn’t thought about it before, but Ji Mian’s remark made him reconsider.

Previously, when he faced off against Berg, Berg’s repeated failed attempts to harm him might have caught Black Snake’s attention.

Black Snake, already a significant power here, had shown no recent activity but was suddenly seeking to recruit people. It seemed unusual.

Ji Mian reassured him, “Don’t worry. I won’t let him bully you.”

Chu Shiye wanted to say something, but Ji Mian continued with a teasing smile, “Of course, I know you won’t be bullied—you’re very capable.”

After a moment of thought, Chu Shiye nodded. “Mm.”

“Was that kid just now Ye Tiancai?”

Ji Mian: “Yes.”

Chu Shiye asked, “He has a terrible personality. Does he often argue with you?”

Ji Mian: “Of course not.”

“I used to think I had a younger brother,” Ji Mian remarked casually. “They had equally bad personalities.”

Chu Shiye’s eyes flickered.

This was the first time Ji Mian had voluntarily mentioned his “family.”

But why say, “I used to think I had a younger brother” instead of “I have a younger brother”?

After a moment of hesitation, Chu Shiye asked the question.

Ji Mian smiled faintly. “Fake is always fake—it can never become real.”

Before Chu Shiye could respond, Ji Mian added leisurely, “Of course, you’re different from them. You’re a good younger brother.”

Chu Shiye: “…Should I say thank you?”

“No need,” Ji Mian replied with a playful smile.

Chu Shiye felt a bit stifled.

The two of them arrived at Kane’s small shop. Just like before, Chu Shiye dragged over a chair for Ji Mian and told him to wait.

After entering the shop, Kane stepped out, shutting the door behind him.

“Has Mr. Su been teaching at the interstellar academy recently?” Kane asked, pulling a chair over to sit beside Ji Mian. “That Ye Tiancai hasn’t caused you any trouble, has he?”

Ji Mian replied, “He’s very obedient.”

Kane’s eyes widened slightly, as if he couldn’t believe someone like Ye Tiancai could be associated with the word “obedient.”

“Are you really a healing type?” Kane asked skeptically.

Ji Mian spread out his fair fingers. “Authentic. Next time, I can heal you if you’d like.”

Kane: “…Alright then.”

As the shop door remained tightly shut, Ji Mian seemed to remember something and asked, “Did Chu Shiye suffer any serious injuries when he was younger? Or did anything significant happen to him?”

Kane scratched his head. “I wouldn’t know. I’ve only known him for the past couple of years, strictly through business dealings.”

“But a lot of people know about the child Old Joseph adopted, and many people didn’t treat him kindly.”

“With the savings he has now, he could easily move into the city. The reason he hasn’t moved is, first, what I just mentioned, and second, because that house was left to him by Old Joseph. It’s the only thing he owns.”

“He’s very stubborn about what’s his. If it’s not his, he won’t take it; if it’s his, he’ll hold on tightly and never let go.”

“Of course, he’s equally stubborn in other matters. For example, he never gives me a discount during transactions. Truly infuriating.”

Ji Mian commented, “That last part is what you really wanted to say, isn’t it?”

The shop door opened, and Chu Shiye glanced at Ji Mian, who was still seated, before gesturing to Kane.

Kane responded, “Alright, coming to settle the bill.”

Inside the dimly lit shop, Chu Shiye handed over the payment to Kane, who counted the new balance on his account with satisfaction. “Thanks to the goods you brought last time, business has been great recently. A new batch will be arriving soon.”

“There’s something very special in that batch. Only one item, and it’s very expensive.”

Chu Shiye asked, “Is it useful to me?”

“Who knows?” Kane shrugged. “It’s… an inhibitor.”

Chu Shiye’s gaze immediately sharpened.

“If you’re an Omega, you’d definitely need inhibitors,” Kane said, stroking his chin. “Everyone knows only Omegas have estrus periods. Although we’ve never had an Omega here, what if one shows up someday… Ah, why are you glaring at me? I’m not implying anything specific. Don’t overthink it.”

“I’m just casually mentioning it. Whether you buy it or not is up to you. After all, it’s not cheap, and it came from the black market. There’s only one dose—of course, the transaction will be entirely confidential. Other than the seller, you, and me, no one else on this planet will know.”

“You can think it over. If you don’t buy it, it doesn’t matter. After all, we don’t even have an Omega here.”

Kane lowered his voice as he spoke, revealing an ambiguous expression. “But then again, without inhibitors, if an Omega enters estrus, no matter how strong they are usually… wouldn’t they still be like fish on a chopping board, left to others’ mercy?”

“Excuse me, sir, may I take a moment of your time to introduce you to our Heavenly Father and Savior…”

On the edge of the street, a curly-haired youth holding a stack of flyers gave Ji Mian a bright smile.

“We’ve met before,” Ji Mian said. “My answer is the same as last time.”

The youth insisted, “Meeting again is fate. I believe everything is guided by the Lord. Since our encounter was destined, why not—”

Ji Mian politely declined, “No, thank you.”

The youth let out a disappointed “Oh” before turning away with his flyers.

Shortly after, Chu Shiye exited the shop, carrying a bag. He walked over to Ji Mian. “Let’s go.”

Ji Mian reached out. “Want me to carry it?”

Chu Shiye replied, “No need.”

Ji Mian stood up and walked alongside Chu Shiye. On the way back, Chu Shiye’s face was expressionless, as usual.

Ji Mian glanced at him a few times. “You have something on your mind.”

Chu Shiye paused for a moment before continuing to walk. “No, I don’t.”

“You do,” Ji Mian said. “It’s written all over your face.”

Chu Shiye: “I…”

Ji Mian cut him off. “Don’t bother denying it. I can tell.”

Chu Shiye: “…”

How does he always see through everything?

Feeling a bit frustrated, Chu Shiye glanced at Ji Mian with a hint of grievance before quickly looking away. In a low voice, he said, “No, you’re mistaken.”

Ji Mian replied, “Is that so? You’re not good at lying, you know.”

Chu Shiye held back for a few seconds before reluctantly speaking—

At the corner of the street, an old man carrying a bamboo basket of sweets, the same one they had encountered before, slowly passed by.

Chu Shiye immediately changed the subject. “Want some candy?”

Ji Mian replied, “No, I don’t like sweets.”

Chu Shiye stopped, bought a bag of candy, and handed it to him.

Ji Mian said, “Thanks.”

He took the candy, bit into a piece, and his eyes curved slightly in satisfaction.

Chu Shiye looked at him seriously and emphasized, “I don’t have anything on my mind.”

With the candy in his mouth, Ji Mian responded, “Mm-hmm, you don’t. I must have been mistaken.”

Chu Shiye visibly relaxed.

After a while, Ji Mian finished the last piece of candy, turned his head toward Chu Shiye, and asked, “So, what exactly was on your mind earlier?”

Chu Shiye: “…”
