AFMD : Chapter 58

The blue and white hospital gown draped over Lin Jingming’s body did not make him look frail at all. He sat up straight, reading to distract himself from the dull pain of his wounds. Shen Hui ran out to buy fruits and toiletries for him. Lin Jingming suggested hiring someone to help, but Shen Hui insisted on going himself.

When the nurse came in to change his bandages, she was impressed to see Lin Jingming so composed, with no sign of distress on his face. Everyone now knew that Lin Jingming had bravely confronted the attacker and subdued him barehanded. There was a glint of admiration in the nurse’s eyes when she looked at him.

“There are many reporters outside who want to interview you. Should I let them in?” In recent years, with the accelerated spread of information on the internet, incidents of knife attacks in crowded places had become all too common in the news, often resulting in heavy casualties. This was a rare occurrence where the assailant was quickly subdued by bystanders, preventing further tragedy.

Lin Jingming had no interest in being portrayed as a hero. This incident happened right in front of his alma mater, and the attacker targeted his younger schoolmate, possibly even a student of his father. It was natural for him to intervene.

“No, thank you.” Media attention might disturb his and Shen Hui’s life, and he preferred to avoid unnecessary attention.

Lin Jingming had forgotten to take off his socks when he changed into the hospital gown earlier, and he only showed the nurse his foot when Shen Hui was not around.

“I almost forgot about this little issue here.” Lin Jingming chuckled, as if he didn’t care much about it.

Shen Hui looked somewhat timid in front of him, crossing a line, but he was quite ruthless when he took action, swiftly and accurately smashing a brick. Lin Jingming blocked it for the attacker, seeming unfazed, but it did hurt a bit. He wished he could tear the attacker apart, but since Shen Hui had taken action, Lin Jingming was afraid he would get involved. He had legal means to ensure the attacker faced justice without being killed.

His little Shen Hui, appearing in court for the first time, should do so as a lawyer, wearing the suit he had carefully prepared for him, using the law as his sword, engaging in legal battles.

The nurse, noticing a dark blood blister near Lin Jingming’s toes, was somewhat surprised. “I’ll call the doctor over.”

“No need, it didn’t hit the bone. Just see if there’s any ointment to apply, otherwise, let it heal naturally.” The nurse applied some antiseptic ointment for him, but she disapproved when she saw Lin Jingming putting his socks back on.

“Please keep this between us. Don’t tell the kid who came with me.”

The nurse was momentarily stunned before realizing that Lin Jingming was referring to Shen Hui. But he was already so grown up, why call him a kid?

“Are you worried about your little brother? But the wound needs to breathe…”

Lin Jingming joked, “Perhaps I can trust the quality of these socks.” After all, Professor Lin was made of money, and the socks had excellent breathability.

Meanwhile, Shen Hui entered with bags of items. Peering through the glass window on the door, he saw Lin Jingming chatting happily with the nurse, and his cheeks puffed up as if he had swallowed half a lemon. He felt so sour.

Shen Hui lowered his eyelashes. Ever since Lin Jingming introduced him to his parents, he finally felt that they were truly together. If the country allowed it, they could get married right away.

How dare he feel jealous?

When Lin Jingming saw Shen Hui return, he discreetly pulled his foot back under the blanket.

Shen Hui confiscated his book and sat at the bedside, peeling an apple for Lin Jingming. “Are you still in pain? You had several stitches, and you won’t let me see them. How mean…”

Shen Hui sniffled, feeling heartbroken again.

“Don’t cry, I wouldn’t dare to be in pain.” Lin Jingming wiped away his tears. “My heart is filled with you, I don’t have time to think about whether it hurts or not. Darling, stop crying, watch out for the knife with your eyes…”

Lin Jingming was afraid that Shen Hui might hurt himself while peeling the apple, so he took away both the knife and the apple. He pressed Shen Hui’s head against his chest. “If you cry again, I’ll have to change my clothes. You know how troublesome it is for me to change clothes now.”

Shen Hui quickly wiped away his tears with his sleeves, rubbing his red eyes. He didn’t dare to let his tears wet Lin Jingming’s hospital gown.

“You still haven’t told me, were you really reluctant to let me go back then, or was it just an act?”

Shen Hui remained silent for a while, nodding in distress. “It was real.”

After he finished crying in Lin Jingming’s arms, he returned to the classroom and sat there blankly. His deskmate, a boy with glasses, leaned over and asked him, “Don’t you want Mr. Lin to leave?”

Shen Hui didn’t answer.

Normally, Lin Jingming, as the top scorer in the college entrance examination, combined with his excellent appearance, was very popular among the students in their final year of high school. There were countless academic and life problems they wanted to ask him about. But Lin Jingming always kept his answers brief, except when it came to Shen Hui, whom he showed exceptional patience towards.

He would often walk to the back row, checking on Shen Hui, who sat alone, and ask, “Do you have any questions you don’t understand?” “Did you eat breakfast?” “If you dare to street race with Huang Mao, you’re dead.”

Shen Hui felt threatened, but others saw it as a combination of kindness and strictness, envying him.

The boy with glasses looked at Shen Hui and suddenly sneered, “You’re too selfish. Mr. Lin is going abroad for further studies, with a bright future ahead. He can’t stay in our small town forever. Why are you clinging to him like a tagalong?”

Shen Hui exploded, “You’re the tagalong! I can’t wait for him to leave! I hate it when someone tries to control me…”

Shen Hui feared becoming someone’s tagalong. Why should he? Those distant relatives never helped him. He had survived on his own abilities until now. Why did this boy think like that?

Would Lin Jingming think the same?

Shen Hui caught a glimpse of Lin Jingming walking towards them, then going down the other staircase. His eyelids twitched.

He tilted his neck and whispered, not knowing if Lin Jingming heard him, “Anyway, anyway, I won’t be a tagalong.”

If Lin Jingming heard, he should hurry up and go abroad. There was no need for him to worry anymore. It wasn’t worth it.

After hearing this, Lin Jingming really wanted to give Shen Hui a light spank on the buttocks. Instead, he pinched him lightly. “You owe me an explanation.”

This little rascal, intentionally not explaining.

Shen Hui didn’t dare to press against Lin Jingming’s body. He climbed down from the bed and sat on the chair, pressing his cheek against Lin Jingming’s palm, like a nestling bird absorbing warmth.

“So, you’re going abroad again?” Lin Jingming almost didn’t hear this sentence. Suddenly, he understood why Shen Hui had run away. This was one of the reasons.

“Eavesdropping on my phone call?” Lin Jingming teased, tugging at Shen Hui’s cheek.

“How could it be considered eavesdropping? You were talking by yourself!”

“If you don’t ask after listening, it’s still eavesdropping.” Lin Jingming sighed. “Shen Hui, you didn’t give me a chance to speak twice.”

Poor Lawyer Lin, even in front of the strictest judge, he could still argue a few more words. “You’re stricter than a judge, no wonder everyone fears a strict wife.”

Shen Hui blushed with embarrassment. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Why can’t you believe that, regardless of the past or the present, I have the ability to keep you by my side?” Lin Jingming’s tone was devoid of any complaints as he comforted Shen Hui. “And besides, even if it’s not for further studies, but just for a few months of separation, can our little Shen Hui not bear it?”

Lin Jingming intentionally added depth to his last sentence, causing Shen Hui to feel embarrassed about being laughed at for “waiting alone at home”.

Yeah, why hadn’t he thought of that?

Money is really great.

Lin Jingming is really great.

To keep his foot injury hidden from Shen Hui, Lin Jingming secretly asked the nurse to apply medicine to the sole of his foot without informing Shen Hui. Shen Hui, in secret, swallowed eight lemons and turned into a sour lemon spirit soaring into the sky.

Does the nurse’s uniform have a calming psychological effect on patients? So Lin Jingming has a preference for it? Or does he think the nurse’s uniform is cleaner? Is it easier to take care of him?

Shen Hui pondered with his chin resting on his hand.

The next day, when Lin Jingming opened his eyes, he saw Shen Hui, who had somehow managed to find a set of nurse’s uniform, looking immaculate, with a slim waist and a noble posture.

Shen Hui proudly twirled in front of Lin Jingming. “I’m a nurse now, so from now on, I’ll take care of everything.”

He lowered his head to warn Lin Jingming, “Especially, no flirting with that pretty female nurse.”

With a fierce glare and a wrinkled nose, everything Shen Hui did looked adorable in Lin Jingming’s eyes. He wanted to…

Lin Jingming couldn’t help but feel a headache. Was Shen Hui testing his patience?

After being discharged from the hospital, Lin Jingming asked Shen Hui if he would like to live together.

“You mean me, my house?” Shen Hui couldn’t believe it. His family lived in a two-story house built twenty years ago, old and messy. Was Lin Jingming willing to stoop down to that level?

“You stayed in my house when you returned to school. When we come back to visit Old Lin, we’ll stay in your house. Isn’t that perfect?”

Shen Hui was excited. “Okay, okay, but I need to tidy up a bit. The things I bought will finally come in handy.”

Lin Jingming looked at Shen Hui’s happy expression and affectionately ruffled his hair.

He could easily buy another house and move in right away. But Lin Jingming remembered the night he chased after Shen Hui, the little house was pitch black, nothing like a home.

Lin Jingming wanted to give Shen Hui a home, one that belonged only to Shen Hui, which no one could take away. In case they quarreled in the future, Shen Hui wouldn’t have to return to an empty house.

Shen Hui lacked a sense of security, and Lin Jingming was determined to provide it for him.

Buying a house directly to give to him obviously wouldn’t be accepted, and Shen Hui couldn’t afford it now anyway. So they had to make full use of Shen Hui’s old house. Plus, Shen Hui’s house was very close to the attached middle school, which would put Lin’s father’s mind at ease, knowing his son was recuperating nearby.

A truck took away a load of delivery boxes, and Lin Jingming hired housekeepers and handymen to clean up the house, check the electrical circuits and pipes, and ensure everything was in working order before turning on all the household appLinces.

Shen Hui set up the kitchen with pots, pans, and utensils, even putting on an apron, feeling like he was preparing a bridal chamber.

Outside the door, a large truck unloaded a double bed. Another delivery trike arrived, filled with enough clothes to fill the wardrobe. Lin Jingming had given his and Shen Hui’s sizes to his secretary and asked her to buy clothes for the whole year and send them over.

The secretary almost thought Lin Jingming’s company was going bankrupt and he wouldn’t come back.

Lin Jingming supervised the moving process, and when he turned around to see the orderly kitchen, fully equipped with everything, he realized they were missing one thing: someone who could cook.

Shen Hui nervously lied, “I can cook!”

“Go rest in the room. By the time you come out, I’ll have finished cooking.” Shen Hui pushed Lin Jingming into the bedroom, then looked at the basket of vegetables and meat with a worried expression.

Or should he order takeout? But Lin Jingming needed to take care of his wound, and eating takeout wouldn’t be good for him.

Shen Hui quietly slipped out of the door, intending to go to the neighbor’s house to hire someone who could cook.

Then he heard Lin Jingming’s light laughter.

Shen Hui felt like he’d been caught red-handed. “Didn’t you tell me to go to sleep?”

“I know exactly how much my wife weighs. How could I sleep peacefully with you alone in the kitchen?” Lin Jingming could easily handle the kitchen with one hand, chopping vegetables, cooking, and plating better than Shen Hui could with both hands.

At first, Shen Hui urged him not to trouble himself, but his small arms couldn’t compete with Lin Jingming’s, so he could only follow behind like a little wife, humbly learning.

The dining table was also bought online by Shen Hui, using his seven months’ worth of live streaming rewards.

Lin Jingming looked at the rectangular wooden table before him, where each person could sit at one end and be separated by two or three meters. Shen Hui placed two chairs in the middle, sitting close together for meals.

“What’s going on in your head? Couldn’t you save some money for yourself instead of buying something so expensive?” Lin Jingming calculated with him. “Couldn’t we buy something cheaper? And that apron… look at how skinny you’ve become.”

The apron was too small for Lin Jingming; he hadn’t used it just now.

Shen Hui weakly defended himself, “This table is made of solid wood, sturdy! And, didn’t I say that the apron is waterproof and oil-proof, with a good texture…”

Seeing him still stubbornly holding his ground, Lin Jingming couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, we’ll see about the table later. Today, you’ll wear the apron first.”

Shen Hui was puzzled. “But I’ve finished cooking, haven’t I?”

“I finished cooking.” Lin Jingming said, “Since you don’t know how to cook, buying the apron is also a waste. It’s over a thousand bucks, couldn’t we use it for something else?”

Five minutes later.

Shen Hui struggled. “Can I keep my underwear?”

“No.”

“Who eats like this?!”

Lin Jingming was serious. “Just like wearing a school uniform to school, it can remind you at all times that you’re a student. The apron can also remind you at all times that if you don’t eat well, you’ll be punished.”

Shen Hui begged for mercy. “I’m sorry, Jingming.”

He would sell the apron tomorrow just like he sold the school uniform!

Lin Jingming reminded him, “When you sold the school uniform back then, you ended up wearing mine.”

Shen Hui: “…”

Trying to make me wear a bigger apron!

What’s the difference between that and not wearing one?
