After dinner, Yi Wei told Sun Qi, “It’s going to start snowing tomorrow, and in a few days, Director Gu will be hosting his friends here for a snow-viewing and barbecue party. As the hostess, I’ll be attending. Can you help me pick out a few sets of women’s clothes to wear?”
“Sure.” Sun Qi nodded but then hesitated and said, “I remember you once said you’d only wear women’s clothes once and never again.”
Yi Wei paused and turned to him with a confused look, “Did I really say that? Maybe you’re remembering it wrong.”
Sun Qi opened his mouth to respond but then nodded, “Yes, you’re right. I must’ve remembered wrong. You didn’t say that.”
Yi Wei nodded as well, and they both agreed to drop the matter.
“Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask you just now” Sun Qi asked, “did you figure out what Wu Qing’s deal is? What kind of person he is?”
“Even though I didn’t speak much, he said quite a lot to me. For me, he’s not difficult to understand. What surprised me was his straightforwardness with me—he told me everything on his mind. But maybe he’s only like that with me. I can tell he’s quite lonely and genuinely wants a true friend. He didn’t realize I’m a man, but he probably felt some kind of connection with me, which is why he truly wants to be friends.”
“He doesn’t see you as a rival and isn’t playing mind games, yet he’s being honest and wants to be your friend?” Sun Qi thought for a moment. “In that case, maybe he doesn’t like Director Gu that much?”
“No, he really does like Director Gu. A lot,” Yi Wei sighed. “Sometimes, you can’t judge people in black and white. Regardless of what he feels, I know we can never be friends.”
The next day, snow began to fall. Gu Yueshan’s Linjiang Mansion had a perfect spot for snow viewing, and after a few days, the snow had thickened. On the day of the gathering, Gu Yueshan’s friends arrived at the mansion to enjoy the snow and barbecue.
As the guests arrived, Wu Jun brought some of his club’s people to help entertain and keep the atmosphere lively, preventing the gathering from turning into a serious business meeting.
Wu Qing also came along with his brother, and as soon as he arrived, he started looking for Yi Wei. When he saw Yi Wei in women’s clothing, he immediately walked over.
“Mi Wei,” Wu Qing greeted with a smile.
Yi Wei turned to him and nodded.
“I brought you a gift.” Wu Qing pulled out a silk box from a paper bag and opened it, saying, “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I brought some jewelry I thought would suit you. Do you like it?”
Yi Wei looked at Wu Qing’s eager smile and felt a bit helpless. He waved his hand and pushed the box back.
“You don’t like it?” Wu Qing asked. “It’s fine if you don’t. What do you usually like? Food, drinks, fun activities? I’ll bring something next time. I know you don’t lack anything, but I’d feel bad coming empty-handed. This is just a small token.”
Yi Wei sighed inwardly and typed on his phone: *[It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s just too expensive. I can’t accept it. Next time, just bring some flowers. That would be nice].*
Wu Qing glanced around at the plants and said, “Oh, so you like plants. Got it. I’ll bring some rare species next time.”
Yi Wei nodded and gestured for Wu Qing to go sit by the grill as everything was ready.
Outside, snowflakes fell gently, while inside, people were lightly dressed, grilling meat, drinking, and chatting, making for a lively atmosphere.
These business tycoons, usually stuck in offices making important decisions, were now grilling their own food, finding joy and relaxation in the activity.
Yi Wei sat next to Gu Yueshan, who grilled meat for him and placed it on a small plate.
“Is it good?” Gu Yueshan asked, watching Yi Wei.
Yi Wei nodded, giving him a thumbs up, genuinely enjoying the food. The chefs had already seasoned it, so it was perfectly grilled.
“Don’t eat too much,” Gu Yueshan said softly, wiping the corner of Yi Wei’s mouth with his thumb. “Too much will cause indigestion.”
Yi Wei nodded while pointing to the seafood and vegetables, asking Gu Yueshan to grill those for him next.
Gu Yueshan smiled indulgently and continued grilling as Yi Wei requested.
Their intimate gestures didn’t go unnoticed by the male and female companions. They were filled with envy, thinking how lucky it must be to live in such a luxurious mansion and be loved and pampered by someone like Gu Yueshan. Since Gu Yueshan wasn’t married yet, they thought it was possible that Mi Wei could eventually be brought into the Gu family.
Wu Qing, too, felt a pang of envy, but he remained calm.
Gu Yueshan chatted with Wei Nanfeng and the others while grilling for Yi Wei. Meanwhile, Yi Wei enjoyed the food and admired the beautiful snowy landscape outside.
Once Yi Wei was about 70% full, he signaled to Gu Yueshan that he was done eating. He then playfully patted Wei Nanfeng’s arm and pointed at a few items for him to grill.
Wei Nanfeng, now aware of Yi Wei’s true identity, was confused. *Why isn’t your man grilling for you? Why are you asking me to grill? You’re bold to eat what I cook, but I’m even bolder for grilling for you.* After thinking for a moment, he realized that Sun Qi must be around, but unable to come out. So, Wei Nanfeng immediately got to grilling.
Yi Wei had a thermal box brought over and filled it with the meat and vegetables that Wei Nanfeng grilled. Then he stood up to take the food to Sun Qi.
“Mi Wei,” Wu Qing called out, following after him.
Yi Wei, just about to reach the door, turned to look at him.
“I have a few things I’d like to say,” Wu Qing said, standing in front of him.
Yi Wei nodded, signaling him to go ahead.
“I’ve been thinking a lot these past few days. And after careful consideration, I’ve decided that more than chasing after Director Gu, I really want to be your friend,” Wu Qing said earnestly. “I can tell Director Gu truly likes you. He doesn’t even glance at me. Trying to make him like me is probably impossible, so I’ve decided to give up. I swear I’ll never try to win Director Gu over or approach him with ulterior motives again. If I’m lying, may I never find true love for the rest of my life!”
Yi Wei blinked, unsure of how to react.
“So… can we be friends?” Wu Qing asked, hopeful.
Yi Wei typed on his phone: *[We’ve only met twice, and you don’t even know what kind of person I am. Why are you so eager to be friends with me?]*
“I’m pretty good at reading people, and I can tell you’re a good person. I trust my instincts—they’ve never been wrong.” Wu Qing spoke with confidence.
Yi Wei received a “good person” card but felt conflicted.
“But don’t get me wrong—I’m not interested in women. I like mature, dependable men,” Wu Qing quickly clarified. “It’s just that I feel an instant connection with you. We’re the same kind of people. You know how they say it’s easy to find gold, but hard to find a true friend? I can meet lots of men I like, but a genuine confidant is rare. I’m not saying we need to be best friends right away. Even just being casual friends would be fine. I could teach you everything I know and help you keep Director Gu!”
Yi Wei took a step back, giving Wu Qing a puzzled look before turning and quickly leaving.
“Mi Wei?” Wu Qing called out, thinking Yi Wei still didn’t believe him, and feeling a wave of disappointment.
Yi Wei took the elevator upstairs and hurried into the lounge where Sun Qi was waiting.
“This is from Director Wei’s grill. It took a while, so it might not taste as good as it did fresh off the fire,” Yi Wei said, handing the thermal box to Sun Qi.
Sun Qi took a bite of the grilled meat and said, “It’s pretty good.”
Yi Wei sat down on the couch and sighed.
“What’s wrong?” Sun Qi asked.
“Wu Qing just made a confession to me,” Yi Wei said.
Sun Qi choked and coughed.
“Not that kind of confession,” Yi Wei clarified. “He wants to be friends with me.”
“And what did you say?” Sun Qi asked, drinking a big gulp of water.
“I didn’t say anything. I just walked away,” Yi Wei said, sounding baffled. “It’s clearly Director Gu who attracts all the unwanted attention, but somehow it feels like I’m the one leading people on and breaking hearts.”
“Maybe he’s trying to trick you, using this as a way to get close to Director Gu,” Sun Qi suggested.
“I can tell he’s being sincere,” Yi Wei replied. “But I almost wish he weren’t. That way, I could teach him a lesson. But I’m not the type to mess with people who mean no harm. Even deceiving him feels wrong.”
“Your charm is too strong, clearly,” Sun Qi said, grinning. “Even your rivals are willing to give up on their crush just to be your friend. Maybe you just have that magnetic quality?”
“I’m not that charming. I’ve been back in the country for years now, and you’re the only friend I’ve made,” Yi Wei replied.
“And what about when you were abroad?”
“Before…,” Yi Wei trailed off, recalling how he’d had many friends abroad and how people seemed eager to befriend him. Even his friends’ parents treated him well. He’d always assumed it was due to his adoptive parents’ influence, but after returning home, that had all disappeared.
Suddenly, Yi Wei looked at Sun Qi and asked, “Why don’t you feel the same way?”
“What do you mean?” Sun Qi blinked in confusion. “Am I supposed to?”
Yi Wei stood up and walked toward him, “You just said I have charm, didn’t you? Does that not work on you? Wu Qing is all over me trying to be friends, and as my only friend here, you’re not even a little bothered?”
“You—stay back. Be careful with your belly!” Sun Qi, seeing Yi Wei approaching, leaned back on the couch, afraid to move, terrified he might accidentally bump into Yi Wei’s pregnant belly.
Yi Wei playfully teased, balancing carefully, not really getting too close, as the two of them bantered. Despite their playful banter, both were mindful of boundaries.
Just as Yi Wei was about to speak, the door suddenly opened, and in walked Gu Yueshan and Wei Nanfeng. The sight froze everyone in place—Yi Wei, Sun Qi, Gu Yueshan, and Wei Nanfeng all stared at each other in awkward silence.
“What exactly is going on here? I feel like I’m missing something,” Wei Nanfeng said with a serious expression, then added, “If two “shou” people are involved, one has to take charge, but why is Yi Wei, who’s dressed as a woman, on top?”
Realizing the situation, Yi Wei quickly stood up and sat back down properly, while Sun Qi hurriedly did the same.
“We were just fooling around,” Yi Wei said quickly. “What are you two doing up here?”
A servant followed them in, carrying a tray with two bowls of pear soup, placing them in front of Yi Wei and Sun Qi before leaving.
Gu Yueshan walked over, saying, “After the barbecue, drink some pear soup to clear the toxins and cool down.”
“You should head back down. It’s not good to leave your guests unattended,” Yi Wei said, taking a sip of the soup.
“If I hadn’t come up, I would’ve missed such an interesting scene,” Wei Nanfeng teased, sitting next to Sun Qi. “Did we interrupt something?”
“You’re such a pain!” Sun Qi pinched him.
Gu Yueshan and Wei Nanfeng didn’t stay long, knowing they couldn’t be away from the guests for too long. After chatting for a while, they headed back downstairs.
“Rest well, and no more fooling around. Be careful with your belly,” Gu Yueshan said to Yi Wei.
“I know, I know. Go on,” Yi Wei replied.
As for Wu Qing, Yi Wei couldn’t be bothered to think about it anymore. He knew they would never be friends.
Afterward, Gu Yueshan continued to have many business engagements, and Yi Wei accompanied him to two more gatherings. The rest of the time, he stayed either at Linjiang Mansion or at the Mi family home, resting.
During this time, Wu Qing came to visit Yi Wei at Linjiang Mansion a few times, but Yi Wei refused to see him. He instructed the staff to tell Wu Qing that if Director Gu wasn’t home, he couldn’t see any visitors.
When winter break ended and school started again, Yi Wei returned to the Mi family home and stayed indoors to rest, avoiding any public appearances.
A few more weeks passed, and the doctors and nurses arranged by Gu Yueshan had moved into the Mi family home, setting up a fully equipped operating room with all the necessary instruments.
Gu Yueshan visited Yi Wei at the Mi family home every day.
Three days after the due date, Yi Wei finally went into labor.
As the contractions started, Yi Wei couldn’t help but recall the painful memories of his miscarriage in his previous life, fear welling up inside him.
Seeing Yi Wei’s pale face, Gu Yueshan held him close and comforted him, “Don’t be afraid. I’ll be with you the whole time.”
Leaning into Gu Yueshan’s embrace, Yi Wei took a deep breath and looked at his adoptive mother, who was holding his hand. “Mom, will the baby be born safely?”
“The baby is ready to come into this world. If you’re scared, imagine how scared the baby must be,” Mi Xue said, looking into Yi Wei’s eyes. “Deep down, you know everything will be fine. As long as you’re okay, nothing will go wrong. We’re all here with you, and everything has been prepared. There’s no way we’ll let anything happen to you or the baby. Gather your courage and tell the baby you’re ready to bring them into this world safely, that you’ll protect them no matter what.”
Yi Wei closed his eyes, thinking, *This time, I’ll protect you. Don’t be afraid, baby. Don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you.*
The fear in Yi Wei’s heart vanished, replaced by a firm resolve to bring his baby into the world safely, no matter what.
