PAGBWMH : Chapter 52

Biological Son or Adopted?

Yi Wei opened his eyes, and the first thing he saw was Gu Yueshan’s face. All his other emotions disappeared, leaving only a sense of peace.

“The baby is right here,” Gu Yueshan said softly, stroking Yi Wei’s face. “Take a look at him.”

Gu Yueshan knew that the moment Yi Wei woke up, he would want to see their child.

Yi Wei turned his head and saw a tiny face, smaller than his palm, with eyes tightly shut, sleeping soundly. His hand trembled as he carefully touched the baby’s face with the back of his hand. The thought that this was the child who never made it to birth in his previous life overwhelmed him, and tears began to flow uncontrollably, filled with guilt.

“Don’t cry,” Gu Yueshan said gently, wiping Yi Wei’s tears with a towel. “The doctor already checked the baby and said he’s very healthy. You took great care of him while he was in your belly.”

“Have you thought of a name for him?” Yi Wei asked, unable to take his eyes off the baby’s tiny face.

“Let’s call him Gu Yao,” Gu Yueshan suggested, “Yao, as in ‘to illuminate,’ symbolizing a warm and bright light.”

“That’s perfect,” Yi Wei nodded. In his previous life, he had died on a cold, dark night, but in this life, his warm light had finally been born. The name Gu Yao seemed to resonate with his heart.

The two of them held hands, gazing at the baby together. In that moment, no words were needed. They leaned on each other’s hearts.

Yi Wei finally understood the phrase “having a child makes everything else seem insignificant.” Once he was able to sit up, he wanted to hold the baby all the time, setting aside all other worries. Just looking at the baby’s face made him feel complete and incredibly happy.

Because it had only been a few days since giving birth, Yi Wei’s body was still weak, and he needed plenty of rest. One night, after the baby had a dirty diaper, the nanny bathed him. Since Gu Yueshan hadn’t come back yet, Yi Wei asked the nanny to put the baby next to him. His plan was to wait for Gu Yueshan while watching the baby, but he fell asleep before he knew it.

Half-asleep, Yi Wei moved his hand and felt that the baby was no longer there. He immediately opened his eyes in a panic.

“You’re back…” Yi Wei stared at Gu Yueshan and, after a moment of confusion, said, “You’re here?”

“Don’t worry. I’m just looking at the baby,” said Gu Yueshan, his manic personality holding the baby in his arms.

“You should,” Yi Wei said, extending his hand to hold Gu Yueshan’s. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“I was afraid that if I showed up too early, you wouldn’t be able to rest properly,” Gu Yueshan said, looking at the baby’s face. “I’ve been anxiously awaiting this baby’s arrival. Before, I always felt uneasy, but now, seeing him here, I finally feel at peace.”

Yi Wei sat up, leaned against Gu Yueshan, and hugged his arm. “I feel the same. Before he was born, I was always anxious. Now I’m finally at ease.”

“I know you want to live peacefully with him and raise the child together. But my existence is always a hidden weakness, a potential danger. Only if I disappear will you truly be able to live without worry.”

Yi Wei looked up at him and said, “That’s not true. You two are part of the same whole. If you’re willing to cooperate, you can integrate back into the main personality. You don’t need to disappear to exist in a normal way.”

“Do you want to know why I don’t want to cooperate?” Gu Yueshan turned to Yi Wei and asked.

Yi Wei nodded. Of course, he wanted to know. Understanding the reason would help solve the problem. If Gu Yueshan was willing to talk about it, it would be for the best.

“The kidnapping incident years ago—he’s been investigating it for so long, but he still hasn’t found the real mastermind. Eventually, the investigation hit a dead end,” Gu Yueshan explained.

“Why couldn’t it continue?” Yi Wei asked, startled.

“Our grandfather also worked tirelessly to investigate, narrowing down the suspects to three possible parties,” Gu Yueshan continued.

“Three parties?” Yi Wei was puzzled by the wording.

“His biological mother’s family, the Xu family; his nominal mother’s family, the Ye family; and the Gu family itself.”

“The Gu family? Who could it be?” Yi Wei asked, surprised.

“His two uncles. Back then, both believed they would inherit the Gu family because neither his biological nor his nominal father had the ability to take charge. But our grandfather chose him instead, and naturally, they weren’t happy about it.”

Yi Wei sighed, thinking back to his dream where no mastermind behind Gu Yueshan’s kidnapping had appeared. If there had been, he could have hinted at it.

“It’s a complicated matter that can’t be explained quickly. He’ll tell you more bit by bit,” Gu Yueshan said, looking at Yi Wei. “The trail went cold years ago. The mastermind hid too well. He’s afraid of stirring things up, so he hasn’t dared to probe too deeply. Over the years, he’s been trying to weaken their power by pitting them against each other, hoping to uncover something useful. But nothing has come of it.”

“If the mastermind behind the kidnapping is ever found, would you then be willing to cooperate with the treatment?” Yi Wei asked the question that had been on his mind.

“There’s probably little hope of finding them. But now that the baby’s born, I want you and the baby to live in peace. Even if it means I have to disappear, I’m willing to cooperate,” Gu Yueshan said.

Yi Wei knew that, despite what Gu Yueshan said, he still felt resentment deep down. If that feeling of bitterness remained, even if he agreed to cooperate, the treatment wouldn’t be fully effective.

Yi Wei gripped his hand tightly and said, “As long as there’s even a little hope, we can’t give up. And like I said, the treatment isn’t to make you disappear—it’s to help you reintegrate and coexist with the main personality.”

Gu Yueshan placed the baby back in the crib, then kissed Yi Wei on the forehead. “It’s late. Let’s go to sleep.”

As Yi Wei lay down, he looked at him and asked, “Aren’t you going to sleep?”

“I’ll watch over you two. Once you fall asleep, I’ll leave,” Gu Yueshan said, stroking Yi Wei’s face.

“I can’t sleep unless you sleep too,” Yi Wei replied, holding his hand.

“Alright,” Gu Yueshan agreed, lifting the blanket and lying down beside him, wrapping his arms around Yi Wei from behind.

Holding Gu Yueshan’s hand tightly, Yi Wei drifted off to sleep.

Mi Xue and Anna spent their days with Yi Wei, and Sun Qi snuck over a few times, always bringing gifts for the baby. Time passed quickly, and before Yi Wei knew it, the baby was already a month old.

Yi Wei could have pretended to be back from abroad and returned to school, but Gu Yueshan thought it wasn’t appropriate to take the baby out so soon. He decided to hold a double celebration for the baby’s full moon milestone and, later, to have their wedding when the baby reached 100 days.

Since they were having a double celebration, Yi Wei wasn’t in a hurry to return to school. He stayed with the baby at the Mi family home, studying while spending as much time with the child as possible.

Sun Qi came to visit again, bringing a pile of gifts. He leaned over the crib and marveled at the chubby, fair-skinned little person, his heart melting.

“How can anyone be this cute?” Sun Qi propped his chin on his hand. “It’s like he’s made of the finest white jade. And those eyes—so black and bright, just beautiful.”

“Stop drooling over my son. If you like kids so much, go have one with Director Wei,” Yi Wei teased as he cradled the baby and fed him with a bottle.

Sun Qi sighed, “It’s not that easy.”

“Your parents don’t agree?” Yi Wei asked.

“I haven’t even told them yet. I just keep insisting that Wei Nanfeng and I are only friends. But they don’t seem to mind our friendship.”

“Well, isn’t that a good sign?” Yi Wei asked, puzzled. “Why are you worrying then?”

“I’m not really worried, just a little anxious,” Sun Qi admitted.

As Yi Wei fed the baby, they chatted idly. Once the baby woke up from his nap, the two of them gave him a bath together in the bathroom.

“A baby this small really changes every day,” Yi Wei said with a smile.

“Yeah, it seems like he’s grown since the last time I visited,” Sun Qi agreed.

“In a few days, it’ll be his double full moon celebration. We’ll be heading back to the Gu family soon,” Yi Wei said.

Sun Qi mused, “I wonder what the atmosphere will be like when you and the baby return to the Gu family. Gu Heng has always been intent on becoming the Gu family heir, but now that Director Gu has his own son, I wonder how long it’ll take him to recover from the blow.”

“I just want him to grow up healthy and happy, doing what he wants in life,” Yi Wei said. “The Gu family is a traditional family business, and passing it down through the generations is hard to change. But I think some old-fashioned ideas should be updated. The kids could inherit shares and live a life of luxury without having to manage the business themselves. Lots of companies do that nowadays. But if they want to manage the company, then Director Gu can teach them. If not, that’s fine too.”

“Maybe that’s what you think, but the rest of the Gu family definitely won’t believe it.”

“I don’t care what they think. I’m not going to tell them anyway. There’s still plenty of time before the baby grows up. I trust Director Gu to make the best decisions,” Yi Wei said as he wrapped the baby in a towel and carried him back to the room.

After dinner, Sun Qi left.

The next day, Gu Yueshan began sending out invitations for the double full moon celebration. It didn’t take long for the news to shake the entire Gu family. Everyone who received an invitation was shocked.

Even though the celebration was still a few days away, cars started arriving at the Gu family home the same day the invitations were sent out.

At Xu Hua’s house, the living room was already filled with people. Besides the Gu family, there were representatives from the Xu and Jiang families, all equally shocked and wanting to find out what was going on.

“Wasn’t he supposed to be infertile? How is there suddenly a child? And the baby’s almost two months old, with a double full moon celebration coming up!”

“We didn’t hear a word about it before now. So, is it true or not that he’s infertile?”

“If it’s not true, why would he spread such a lie? Infertility isn’t exactly something to brag about.”

“Have we been fooled all these years?”

“Madam, what’s going on?”

Xu Hua was already feeling extremely frustrated. The noise only made her headache worse. She rubbed her temples and snapped, “Stop shouting! If I knew what was going on, do you think I’d be sitting here like this?”

Gu Heng, sitting nearby, was equally anxious, his face dark. If it turned out his uncle wasn’t infertile and now had a child, his chances of becoming the Gu family heir would be slim to none.

Gu Heng’s mother, unable to sit still, paced by the wall before grabbing her sister-in-law’s hand tightly. “What are we going to do? What are we going to do?!”

Jiang Shuqin’s sister-in-law frowned, unsure of what to say.

“Could it be that the child isn’t biological but adopted?” Gu Heng’s third uncle suggested.

Everyone turned to look at him.

“That’s possible. Maybe he couldn’t have his own children and didn’t feel close to his nephews, so he adopted a child to raise as his own for his old age.”

“That makes sense. But if the child is adopted, they won’t be able to inherit the Gu family business.”

Jiang Shuqin quickly rushed to Xu Hua’s side, urging, “Mom, you should call Uncle and ask if the child is adopted!”

“I’ve already called. He won’t pick up. Secretary Wu said Yueshan will bring the baby back the day after tomorrow. We’ll have to wait until then to find out,” Xu Hua said, frowning.

“Wait until the day after tomorrow?!” Jiang Shuqin clutched her chest, struggling to breathe. She knew she wouldn’t be able to eat or sleep for the next two days.

The situation at Ye Feng’s side was similar. The house was filled with people, all talking over each other, shocked and full of speculation.

Gu Yueshan’s three phones, as well as the office and assistant’s lines, rang non-stop. But everyone who wanted answers received the same response: “Director Gu would return home with the child the day after tomorrow, and everything would be explained then.”

Full moon : It is celebrated one month after the baby’s birth, as 30 days symbolize the cycle of a full moon. The 30th day signifies the end of the newborn’s fragile and vulnerable phase.

Rain : I bet they all did not sleep for 2 days hahahaha it’s so satisfying !
