PAGBWMH : Chapter 54

Everyone's Perspective

In the Yi family’s living room, the atmosphere was tense, as if the air itself had frozen. The four of them sat in silence, their anxiety feeding off one another and intensifying by the minute.

When the phone rang, Zhao Zhen rushed to answer it, but her voice failed her at first. She took a deep breath and tried again. “Have the results come in?”

After hearing the person on the other end, she slowly set the phone down.

Everyone turned to Zhao Zhen, waiting for the news.

Zhao Zhen turned to them and said, “They said both of the grandmothers have received the test results. The child really is Gu Yueshan and Yi Wei’s biological son.”

“Yi Wei is already married to Director Gu, and now they have a child.” Yi Hong sighed. “I never would have imagined things would turn out like this.”

“They kept everyone in the dark.” Zhao Zhen said. “Even the Gu family had no idea. How could we have guessed?”

“No! It’s impossible!” Yi Xuan suddenly stood up, his face contorted with anger. “Director Gu can’t have children! How could he have a child, and how could Yi Wei be the one to give birth to it? It’s not possible! It’s all a lie!”

Zhao Zhen, startled by Yi Xuan’s outburst, got up and gently pulled him back, trying to calm him down. “Yi Xuan, calm down. They’ve already said that even though Director Gu has his own child now, it will be years before the boy is grown. They’ll still make plans for Gu Heng.”

“Plans?” Yi Xuan squatted down, clutching his head in frustration, tears welling up. “What’s the point of planning? They’re already married and have a child… What’s the point?”

Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong exchanged a glance, both sighing heavily.

They assumed Yi Xuan was upset for Gu Heng, but in truth, he was mourning his own lost chances. He could never have imagined this outcome.

Yi Bo remained silent, deep in thought. His gaming company was struggling, and he might soon have to rely on his father’s business to get by. With Yi Wei now married to Gu Yueshan and having a child, he realized how difficult their future would be.

On the day of Gu Yao’s double one-month celebration, guests began arriving at the Gu family home.

The news that Gu Yueshan now had his own son had shocked both the Gu family and their circles, and the topic dominated conversations as guests gathered.

“We’ve all heard for years that Director Gu was infertile. Now he suddenly has a biological son? Is that really true?”

“I heard both grandmothers tested the hair samples themselves. It’s confirmed—he’s Director Gu’s son.”

“Well, that means his nephews won’t have a shot at inheriting the family business now. If he can have one child, he can have a second, a third, or even a fourth. They’ll never need to consider the nephews.”

“Exactly. Maybe some of them will be fine, but Gu Heng and Gu Chang, who were always considered the most likely heirs, must be devastated.”

Wu Qing had come with his brother to the celebration, once again dressed in women’s clothing. The news that Gu Yueshan had a child—born to his assistant Yi Wei, who was now his wife—had shocked him. His first thought was how heartbroken Mi Wei must be.

Wu Qing had visited Mi Wei several times, but she refused to see him. He decided to respect her wishes and stopped trying to meet her. However, after hearing about Gu Yueshan’s child, he couldn’t resist attending the celebration. He wanted to see for himself what kind of person Yi Wei really was.

“We have so many guests here to celebrate with us today. So many people came to see you, and they brought you lots of gifts too,” Yi Wei said as he dressed the baby, gently lifting him.

Gu Yueshan came up behind Yi Wei, wrapping his arm around him. “Are you ready?”

“All set.” Yi Wei smiled, then turned to Gu Yueshan, showing him the baby’s outfit. “How do you like his outfit? I picked it.”

“It’s great. Very festive,” Gu Yueshan said, looking at their baby, dressed in a bright red romper.

“Good. Now, let’s go. I can’t wait to show off our beautiful baby. It would be a shame not to show off such a lovely child.” Yi Wei said proudly, beaming with joy.

“Let’s go.” Gu Yueshan kissed Yi Wei on the cheek, holding him close as they headed out.

When they walked into the main hall, all eyes turned to them. After they sat in the primary seats, guests came over to offer congratulations, showering the baby with compliments. Yi Wei smiled politely as he responded to each one.

“So that’s Yi Wei.” Wu Qing thought to himself as he observed from afar. Yi Wei was indeed attractive and looked intelligent. Mi Wei, with her simple innocence, clearly wouldn’t have been able to compete with him. Wu Qing sighed inwardly, thinking that Mi Wei had no chance now that Yi Wei was married to Gu Yueshan and had his child. He wondered what would happen to Mi Wei—would she continue to be hidden away in the shadows?

Xu Hua studied the baby’s face. The child was undeniably beautiful and adorable. As she looked at her grandson, Xu Hua felt the tug of familial connection, but something about it also made her feel uneasy, as if there was a barrier between her and the child.

“Let Grandma hold you.” Ye Feng said with a smile, extending her arms.

Yi Wei stood up and handed the baby to Ye Feng, who gazed adoringly at the child’s face. She didn’t have her own children, nor had she ever raised a baby, but looking at this child filled her with affection.

“Our Little Yao’er is such a handsome boy. He inherited all the best features from both his father and his daddy.” Ye Feng said, laughing. The people standing around her chimed in, echoing her praise for the baby.

Xu Hua glanced at Ye Feng’s beaming face, seething inwardly. *She has no blood relation to this child, yet here she is, acting like the real grandmother.*

After finishing a cup of tea, Yi Wei stood up to retrieve his son. He smiled and said, “This little guy is getting heavy. I wouldn’t want Grandma to get too tired.”

Sun Qi and Wei Nanfeng stood a short distance away, chatting. Sun Qi glanced over at Yi Wei from time to time, wanting to go over and talk to him, but with so many Gu family elders around, it didn’t seem appropriate.

“Let’s have a baby of our own.” Wei Nanfeng whispered.

“Are you drunk?” Sun Qi shot him a look, then pulled him toward the round table. “Come on, Director Wei, have some fruit or snacks. You’re talking nonsense and you haven’t even started drinking yet.”

Wei Nanfeng sighed, “I’m so envious of Yueshan. He’s got a wife and a child now. Imagine going to bed with your wife and having your baby sleep beside you. That must be the true meaning of happiness. I want to experience that feeling, too. Who needs immortality when you can have love like that?”

“Keep your voice down!” Sun Qi glanced around nervously, lowering his voice. “They’re already married. We’re not even close to that. I’m not getting married until after we graduate.”

Wei Nanfeng looked at Sun Qi for a moment, clearly about to express more of his feelings. But before he could, Sun Qi reached into his suit jacket and pinched his waist hard, using his eyes to silently threaten him. Wei Nanfeng had no choice but to swallow his words.

Yi Wei noticed that Sun Qi was having trouble approaching and decided to take the baby over to him and Wei Nanfeng.

“Come on, baby. Look.” Yi Wei lifted the child a bit, “This is your Uncle Wei and your Brother Sun Qi.”

Sun Qi stared at Yi Wei, wide-eyed. “What kind of title is that?”

“You’re still young. Being called ‘uncle’ would make you sound old, so it’s better to go with ‘brother.’ You and Mr. Wei can each have your own title.” Yi Wei teased.

“But calling me ‘brother’ doesn’t feel right either.” Sun Qi said. “If Wei is Uncle, I should be from your side of the family.”

Yi Wei smirked and whispered, “You and Mr. Weii can talk about it. He calls you brother, you call him uncle.”

Sun Qi, finally understanding, gave him a playful glare. “Can you be serious for once? You’re talking like this in front of your son.”

“It’s fine. Our baby doesn’t understand yet, right?” Yi Wei kissed the baby’s cheek.

“Did you pick out this outfit?” Sun Qi asked, shooting Yi Wei an exasperated look. “What’s with your taste?”

“Doesn’t it look good? Director Gu said it was nice.” Yi Wei said, confused. “I think it looks great too.”

“Of course he’d say it looks good—you picked it. You could wrap the baby in a blanket, and he’d still say it looks good. It’s all thanks to the baby’s looks that he can pull off this outfit.” Sun Qi said. “From now on, I’ll handle the baby’s wardrobe. You’re not allowed to pick out clothes anymore.”

“Fine, less work for me.” Yi Wei laughed.

“Yi Wei.”

Yi Wei turned and saw Gu Chang approaching. He nodded in acknowledgment.

“Congratulations to both you and my fourth uncle. I’ve brought a gift for my little cousin. It’s my first time picking out something for a baby, so I hope you like it.” Gu Chang said with a smile.

“Thank you.” Yi Wei replied.

“I’d like to hold him, but I’ve never held a baby before, and I’m afraid I’d be too awkward. Can I just shake his hand?” Gu Chang asked.

Yi Wei lifted the baby’s hand. “Come on, little one. Shake hands with your cousin.”

Gu Chang gently grasped the baby’s tiny fist. “Hello, Gu Yao. I’m your cousin Gu Chang. We’ve officially met today. When you start talking, don’t forget to call me ‘brother.’”

Though many people had said Gu Heng and Gu Chang were the most likely candidates to inherit the Gu family business, Gu Chang never had high hopes of becoming the heir. His main reason for competing with Gu Heng was simply that he disliked him. When he learned that his fourth uncle had a son, Gu Chang was genuinely happy, knowing that Gu Heng would be crushed. The more miserable Gu Heng was, the happier Gu Chang felt.

After Gu Chang left, Yi Wei saw Yi Xuan approaching.

“Can I see the baby?” Yi Xuan asked, his expression a mix of panic and pain. Ever since learning that Gu Yueshan had a child, his emotions had been in turmoil. Today, he had come to see the baby in person—the child that belonged to Gu Yueshan.

Yi Wei’s face remained expressionless as he looked at Yi Xuan. A servant quickly approached and informed him that the Mi family had arrived.

Yi Wei, holding the baby, walked toward the entrance to greet his adoptive mother and the rest of the Mi family. His son was his pride and joy. He would decide who got to see him, and who didn’t.

Yi Xuan stared at Yi Wei’s retreating figure, frozen in place for a long time.
