Yi Wei lay in Gu Yueshan’s arms with his eyes closed. He was already awake but didn’t feel like getting up. He stretched out his legs and draped them over Gu Yueshan’s body, rubbing his face against him like a cat.
Gu Yueshan tightened his embrace and gently kissed the top of Yi Wei’s head.
“Is it time to get up?” Yi Wei asked with his eyes still closed. “I have to go to class today.”
“It’s still early. You have more than three hours before class. You can sleep a little longer.” Gu Yueshan replied.
“Are you going to the office now?” Yi Wei asked.
“Mm.” Gu Yueshan responded.
“Then I’ll get up too.” Yi Wei said, opening his eyes. “Since I’m already awake, we might as well have breakfast together. After that, you can head to work.”
“Alright.” Gu Yueshan said, pulling Yi Wei up into a sitting position.
Yi Wei wrapped his arms around Gu Yueshan’s neck, and the two of them shared a moment of intimacy before getting out of bed and heading to the bathroom to freshen up.
After having breakfast together, the nanny brought the baby over. Yi Wei held the baby in his arms as he saw Gu Yueshan off.
“Say goodbye to Daddy.” Yi Wei said, raising the baby’s chubby little fist and waving it.
Gu Yueshan hugged Yi Wei, kissed him on the cheek, then kissed the baby’s soft, chubby face before turning to leave.
Yi Wei stood at the door, watching Gu Yueshan until he was out of sight. Then he turned and walked back inside with the baby. He thought to himself : This is the life I want—to sleep in Gu Yueshan’s arms every night, wake up together for breakfast, and then see him off to work with our child. When I don’t have to go to class, I’ll stay home with the baby. When I do have to go to class, I’ll study hard, and then we’ll both spend time with the baby when I get back. This simple, repetitive life brings me endless happiness.
If he could live like this every day, it would be the greatest blessing of his life. Unfortunately, he couldn’t achieve that just yet. There were still things left unresolved that could disrupt their peaceful life. But it didn’t matter—he was confident that together with Gu Yueshan, they could protect their happiness.
It was still cold outside, but the house was warm. Yi Wei sat on the bed and laid the baby, wearing just a little vest, on the bed. As the air inside was slightly dry, he gently applied baby lotion and gave the baby a light massage, exercising his little arms and legs.
Looking at the baby’s soft, white skin, as smooth as milk pudding, Yi Wei couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and joy for having given birth to such a beautiful child, who looked like a little celestial being.
He picked up the baby and gently rubbed his face against the baby’s cheek. “My little baby, you’re the cutest in the world, aren’t you?”
Lifting the baby up in the air, Yi Wei smiled and said, “Aren’t you?”
The baby flashed a toothless smile, making Yi Wei laugh even more joyfully.
When it was time to go to his family studies class, Yi Wei had already lulled the baby to sleep and placed him in the nursery next door. The baby was watched over by four nannies and two childcare experts, who worked in three shifts. With security guards stationed inside and outside the courtyard, no one was allowed to enter or leave while Gu Yueshan and Yi Wei were not at home—there were no exceptions.
When Yi Wei arrived at the family studies hall, the other students waiting for class turned to look at him. He found a spot, sat down, and began reviewing his materials on his computer while waiting for class to begin. A few students came over to greet him, and Yi Wei smiled and nodded in response.
Seeing this, other students hesitated about whether or not to greet Yi Wei.
“We should go say hello. After all, Yi Wei is now one of the rightful masters of the Gu family.”
“That’s right. He’s not just a student at the family studies class anymore. Director Gu is the head of the Gu family, and Yi Wei is his legal partner. He’s also given birth to Director Gu’s eldest son. He’s solidified his position in the family.”
“Gu Heng’s life in the Gu family will probably be tough from now on. He’s been at odds with Yi Wei ever since their engagement was called off. Now that Yi Wei has married Director Gu, he won’t let Gu Heng off easily.”
“I don’t think it’ll go that far. Gu Heng’s grandmother is still around, and she’s Director Gu’s biological mother. She’s always favored Gu Heng and won’t let him be mistreated.”
“That’s true. But regardless of what happens in the Gu family, Yi Wei has already secured his place. Even if we don’t try to curry favor with him, it’s only polite to say hello.”
“Let’s go, or he’ll head to class soon.”
When Sun Qi entered the hall, he sat beside Yi Wei, and while they were chatting, several students came over to greet Yi Wei.
After checking the time, Yi Wei got up, and he and Sun Qi walked to class together. In the hallway, they ran into Gu Heng, Yi Xuan, and a few others.
Both groups stopped in their tracks. Yi Wei smiled and took a few steps forward, looking at Gu Heng.
“Mr. Gu and I will be holding our wedding soon. When are you and Yi Xuan planning to get married?” Yi Wei asked with a smile.
His question had a clear implication—he was indirectly asking when Gu Heng and Yi Xuan planned to move out of the Gu family estate.
Gu Heng clenched his fists, remaining silent. Yi Xuan lowered his head and didn’t respond.
He Mingshu, unable to contain his anger, muttered under his breath, “The villain succeeds.”
“What did you say?” Yi Wei looked at He Mingshu and asked, pretending not to have heard him. “I didn’t catch that. Could you say it again?”
“He called you a villain.” Sun Qi said loudly.
Yi Wei chuckled. “You know I’m a villain, and you know I’m currently having my way. Yet, you dare say that to my face? I have to admire your courage.”
“I’m sorry!” He Mingshu immediately said. “I was talking about myself. I called myself a villain.”
He Mingshu cursed himself inwardly for not being able to hold his tongue. Gu Heng had already warned him that if he couldn’t control his mouth, he should leave the Gu family studies program and stop following him.
Yi Wei blinked in surprise. “You apologized a little too quickly this time, didn’t you? I was just thinking how courageous you were. I’m now Gu Heng’s elder, and since you and Gu Heng are cousins, that makes me your elder as well. Even Gu Heng doesn’t dare speak out, but you had the guts to insult me to my face. Impressive courage, but why apologize so quickly? A little more persistence would’ve been better.”
“I really wasn’t talking about you. I was insulting myself. I’m the villain, the most despicable villain.” He Mingshu said with his head bowed.
Gu Heng took a deep breath and closed his eyes, trying to remain calm.
Yi Wei smirked. With class about to start, he couldn’t afford to waste time, so he quickly walked ahead, knowing he would have plenty of opportunities to deal with them later.
As they exited the hall, Gu Heng stopped and turned to He Mingshu. “I don’t want to say anything more. This is the last time I’m telling you—either stop coming to the Gu family studies class starting tomorrow, or stop following me from today onward. The choice is yours.”
After saying that, Gu Heng walked away. Yi Xuan glanced at He Mingshu, sighed inwardly, and followed Gu Heng. He had neither the energy nor the desire to plead for He Mingshu anymore.
Left standing there alone, He Mingshu was so angry he was on the verge of tears.
After class, Sun Qi said to Yi Wei, “I’m done with classes for the day. Can I come with you to see the baby?”
“Of course.” Yi Wei replied. “Don’t you have a date with Director Wei today?”
“He’s busy with work. It’s not like we can go on dates every day. Haven’t you ever heard the saying?”
“What saying?”
“If our love is meant to last, why should we be together day and night.”
“Stop it. You’re giving me goosebumps.” Yi Wei said, rubbing his arms.
As they walked, someone suddenly approached them, saying that the second matriarch wanted to see Yi Wei.
Yi Wei thought to himself, *What’s meant to come will come.* He agreed to go right away.
“Are you really going?” Sun Qi asked, concerned. “Maybe you shouldn’t go.”
“Don’t worry. She can’t do anything to me, and I can’t keep avoiding her forever. Otherwise, she’ll think I’m afraid of her.” Yi Wei said with a smile. “You head to Haitang Courtyard first. I’ll be there soon.”
Sun Qi nodded and whispered, “You should call Director Gu before you go.”
“Alright.” Yi Wei smiled and walked away.
In truth, there was no need to call Gu Yueshan—no one in the Gu family dared to lay a hand on him.
Yi Wei entered the west wing’s hall, where Xu Hua was sitting and waiting for him. When she saw him walk in, she said, “I thought you wouldn’t dare show up.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Yi Wei smiled, seating himself across from her. “You’re not a tiger. You’re as kind and gentle as they come, so you’re certainly not going to eat me.”
“Hmph.” Xu Hua snorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “It seems I underestimated you. You’re not just highly intelligent and a fast learner; you’re also quite the actor, and you’re very calculating. It takes at least seven or eight months to carry a child to term, and you didn’t let a single hint slip. Impressive.”
“Thank you for the compliment, old lady.” Yi Wei replied. “Do you think I’ve proven myself worthy now? Am I qualified to be with Yueshan, and to be the matriarch of the Gu family, helping him manage things?”
Xu Hua was momentarily taken aback but quickly responded, “I almost forgot how sharp your tongue can be.”
Yi Wei thought to himself, “You must have forgotten pretty quickly.”
“You think that now that you’ve married Yueshan and given him a child, you can relax and live happily ever after?” Xu Hua’s face darkened as she looked at Yi Wei. “You’ve read enough books to know that nothing is certain in life.”
“Ever since I found out I was pregnant, I’ve never felt secure. That’s why I kept the pregnancy a secret until the baby was born.” Yi Wei said calmly. “Now that the baby is safely here, as long as he’s safe, nothing else matters. Yueshan will protect me.”
Xu Hua sneered. “You’re still in the honeymoon phase, and he’s saying sweet things to keep you happy. But feelings fade, and one day you might grow tired of each other. Divorce isn’t out of the question. Don’t be surprised when I say this—he still keeps a woman at the Linjiang Villa. Who knows? There might be a second or third.”
Yi Wei pretended to be shocked for a moment before smiling. “If she’s being kept outside, that means she’s already lost. The Gu family isn’t short on money, so no matter how many mistresses Yueshan keeps, none of them will ever be more suitable to be the matriarch of the Gu family than I am. Yueshan may enjoy beauty, but he’s not foolish enough to be blinded by it. He knows better than anyone who is suited for what position.”
“Your confidence and composure are unmatched by most people, but remember, the more confident someone is, the harder they fall when they fail.” Xu Hua warned.
“You’re right, Matriarch.” Yi Wei replied with a smile. “I think Gu Heng and Aunt Qin are probably feeling that way right now.”
“You really have a sharp tongue.” Xu Hua said, trying to suppress her anger.
“Thank you for the compliment, Matriarch.” Yi Wei said, standing up. “I should go take care of my child now. I won’t disturb you any longer.”
After Yi Wei left, Jiang Shuqin emerged from the side parlor.
“That boy’s words cut deeper than a knife.” Jiang Shuqin said bitterly. “He used to act so well-behaved. I didn’t see this coming at all.”
“Everything he said is true, even if it wasn’t pleasant to hear.” Xu Hua said, sighing deeply as she closed her eyes. “He’s sharp and cautious, with no apparent weaknesses. He’s not easy to deal with. If only he and Heng could have been together—he would’ve been such a great asset.”
Xu Hua had summoned Yi Wei, hoping to scold and warn him while testing his resolve. But instead, she found herself outwitted and left feeling even angrier than before.
“Mom, there’s no point dwelling on that now. We need to focus on making plans for Gu Heng.” Jiang Shuqin said, clearly anxious.
“You’re old enough to know better, but you don’t even have half of Yi Wei’s composure. From now on, don’t get involved in anything. I don’t expect you to be helpful, but at least don’t drag us down.” Xu Hua said sternly, getting up to return to her room.
Jiang Shuqin opened her mouth as if to speak but was too filled with frustration to say anything.
