Yi Wei returned to the courtyard, holding his baby, and headed to Haitang Courtyard.
As soon as Sun Qi saw Yi Wei enter with the baby, he eagerly walked over and took the child into his arms, exclaiming, “Baby!”
Sun Qi gently rocked the baby in his arms and looked at Yi Wei, asking, “That old lady didn’t give you any trouble, did she? Did she make things difficult for you?”
“No one in the Gu family can do anything to me. Even if she wanted to make things hard for me, she wouldn’t do it in such a way. It would only give Director Gu a reason to get angry with her,” Yi Wei said, sitting down and taking a sip of tea. “She just wanted to scold me a bit to vent her frustration and test whether I care about Director Gu keeping women outside. But unfortunately for her, not only did she fail to vent, she seemed to get even more upset.”
“Testing whether you care about Director Gu keeping women outside?” Sun Qi couldn’t help but laugh. “It looks like your plan is already working.”
“Not quite yet. We’ll have to see what their next move is,” Yi Wei said seriously. “This is just the beginning, the real beginning.”
“Let’s not dwell on that. In this life, being happy is what matters most,” Sun Qi said, sitting next to Yi Wei with the baby and turning the baby’s face toward him. “Look at this beautiful little face. What could possibly be worth being upset about?”
Yi Wei smiled, his gaze filled with tenderness.
The baby also laughed.
“He’s laughing!” Sun Qi said excitedly. “This is the first time I’ve seen him smile. He’s so cute!”
The two of them played with the baby for a while. At this age, the baby’s daily routine consisted of eating and sleeping. Once the baby fell asleep again, the two quietly sat by his side, studying.
The next day, Yi Wei had to attend classes at the academy. Before heading to school, he dropped the baby off at the Mi family’s home. After finishing his classes, he returned to the Mi family to study under his adoptive mother’s guidance, and later, he took the baby to Gu Yueshan’s office to wait for him so they could all go home together.
Carrying the baby, Yi Wei walked into the office and said, “We’ve come to pick up Daddy and take him home. Our little baby is only two months old, and he’s already here to pick up Daddy. Isn’t that so, baby? Ask Daddy if he’s proud of you, baby, because at just two months old, you’re already such a good, filial child.”
“Was it a tiring day?” Gu Yueshan asked, looking at Yi Wei.
“Not at all,” Yi Wei shook his head and walked over to him, holding the baby out. “Come on, baby, give Daddy a little kiss, one that smells like milk.”
Gu Yueshan took the baby into his arms and gave him a gentle kiss on his soft, chubby cheek.
“How much longer until we can go home?” Yi Wei asked, leaning against the desk.
“I’ve got two more documents to review and sign, then we can head home,” Gu Yueshan replied.
“Alright,” Yi Wei said, taking the baby back. “We won’t disturb Daddy’s work. We’ll wait quietly on the side so Daddy can finish up quickly, okay, baby?”
Gu Yueshan continued reviewing the documents while Yi Wei sat on the couch with the baby, patiently waiting. They had already agreed to try and go home on time every day. If there was any unfinished work, Gu Yueshan would bring it home so they could spend most of their evenings together as a family.
Once Gu Yueshan finished his work, the three of them went home together.
After dinner and a bath, Yi Wei lay in Gu Yueshan’s arms, holding the baby. Gu Yueshan pressed a button on the remote, and a large screen descended in front of the bed. The screen was divided into four sections, each playing recordings of important domestic and international business meetings. Beside Gu Yueshan was a laptop for taking notes.
Yi Wei thought there was nothing wrong with letting the baby be exposed to such things from an early age. Even if the child wasn’t interested in business later on, it wouldn’t hurt to have some exposure and understanding of it.
Yi Wei sat up and laid the baby on the bed, gently giving him a little workout. He wanted to pay attention to the meeting discussions as well, even though he was still technically Gu Yueshan’s assistant at the company. These high-level meetings weren’t something he needed to listen to, but now that he was also the Gu family’s matriarch, learning from these discussions seemed like a good idea.
However, with four different meetings playing at the same time, each on a completely different topic, Yi Wei found himself getting confused after just a short while. When he looked over at Gu Yueshan, he saw him listening intently while quickly taking notes on the computer. Yi Wei suddenly felt a sense of admiration.
Gu Yueshan noticed Yi Wei’s gaze and turned to look at him. “What is it?” he asked.
“Mr. Gu, you really are amazing,” Yi Wei said, lying down in his arms. “I was always at the top of my class in the economics department, but even listening to just one of these meetings, I don’t understand much. Yet you can listen to four different meetings at once and still get all the information you need. Not many people could do that, right? I really admire you, Director Gu.”
“It’s just a matter of practice. Over time, you’ll be able to do it too,” Gu Yueshan said, holding Yi Wei close. “You’re a fast learner.”
“Even if I worked hard and trained, I could never have your level of ability,” Yi Wei said humbly. He sat up and picked up the baby, saying, “Baby, look how amazing your Daddy is. You should learn from him too, and it will benefit you for life.”
Even Yi Wei couldn’t help but marvel at how different people’s fates could be. For some, their starting point was a place that most people could never reach, no matter how hard they worked.
Yi Wei leaned back into Gu Yueshan’s arms, holding the baby. He felt a deep sense of peace. He loved this life—even though it was repetitive, it filled him with happiness and contentment. Unfortunately, there were still many unresolved issues. Only when everything was settled would they truly be able to enjoy a life of peace. For now, this was just some leisure time in the busy life
The next day, after breakfast, Yi Wei headed to the family studies class.
When he entered the hall, he saw Sun Qi and his younger brother sitting on the sofa and walked over to them.
“What’s wrong?” Yi Wei asked Sun Qi, noticing that Sun Yu seemed to be in a bad mood.
“He didn’t make it onto the list of students recommended to the famous teachers this time,” Sun Qi sighed. “He stayed abroad to train during the entire holiday, preparing for the competition. He even won an award. We thought he had a good chance this time, but his hopes were dashed.”
“Let me see the teacher’s evaluation,” Yi Wei said.
Sun Qi took Sun Yu’s phone, opened the file, and handed it to Yi Wei.
“The evaluation is really high, and there are no mistakes on record. He’s won enough awards too. Why didn’t he get recommended?” Yi Wei asked in confusion.
“They said there were many outstanding students this time, and the others were just a little more suitable,” Sun Qi explained, sighing again in disappointment. “Being taught by a famous teacher makes a big difference in a student’s future. It’s not just about the money; it’s about connections. We’ll have to wait for the next opportunity.”
To be taught by a truly renowned master wasn’t just a matter of paying money; it also required connections and luck to be chosen as a student by the master.
Yi Wei handed the phone back to Sun Qi and glanced at Sun Yu. “Go home for now. After class, I’ll ask around and see if there’s still a chance to get your name added to the recommendation list.”
Sun Yu was stunned for a moment. “Really?”
“Yes. Go get some rest,” Yi Wei said, standing up and heading to class with Sun Qi.
Sun Qi turned to Yi Wei and said, “If it doesn’t work out, just let it go. Don’t get into any trouble with the people in charge. Even though you’re married to Director Gu, the academy has its own processes. You don’t want to risk anything that might affect your reputation.”
“Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing,” Yi Wei replied with a smile.
After class, Yi Wei and Sun Qi went to the academy’s administration office, where Yi Wei directly told the staff that he wanted to review all the recommendation files for the piano students this time.
The staff member didn’t want to offend Yi Wei but explained that he didn’t have access to the files. “The deputy director is responsible for this matter, so you’ll need permission from the deputy director to open these files.”
“Is the deputy director in?” Yi Wei asked.
“In his office,” the staff member replied.
Yi Wei walked over to the deputy director’s office and rang the bell. After a moment, the large doors opened automatically.
When Yi Wei entered, he saw Deputy Director Xu Peng leisurely sipping tea. Yi Wei had been to the chief director’s office before, but this was his first time in the deputy’s office. It was even more spacious and luxurious than the chief’s.
“Do you need something?” Xu Peng asked without looking up.
“I’d like to see the recommendation files for the piano students this time. Could you grant me access?” Yi Wei said.
“You want to see them?” Xu Peng sneered. “You’re just a student. What gives you the right to look at those files? Just because you married Yueshan, you think you can do whatever you want in the Gu family? Maybe in the Gu family, but not here at the academy!”
“I’m Director Gu’s assistant, and when something seems off, it’s my duty to investigate and report back to him. Or do you want me to have Director Gu call you so he can tell you himself?” Yi Wei asked.1¹
Xu Peng’s hand paused mid-pour. He finally looked up at Yi Wei and said, “I’m Yueshan’s uncle. Hasn’t your family taught you to show respect to your elders?”
“Director Gu’s uncles are all named Ye. He’s never told me about an uncle named Xu. Since Director Gu doesn’t acknowledge any relatives by that name, I wouldn’t dare recognize one either,” Yi Wei said with a smile.
Xu Peng was actually Xu Hua’s youngest cousin, and he certainly wasn’t Gu Yueshan’s uncle. He was simply inflating his status to try and assert authority over Yi Wei.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Xu Peng slammed his tea cup down.
“Nothing much. Even if I said the same thing in front of the second matriarch, I’d say it again. Maybe you should tell her exactly what I said and see how she responds,” Yi Wei said, his expression indifferent. “Since you don’t want to give me access, I’ll just call Director Gu and have him set up special permissions for me so I can look at whatever I want.”
Yi Wei turned to leave, but Xu Peng quickly called out, “Wait! I’ll give you access. You can look at the files.”
“There’s no need to trouble you, Deputy Director. I’ll just let Director Gu handle it. After all, his time isn’t as precious as yours, and even if he is busy, it’s certainly not as important as your tea-drinking, right?” Yi Wei said loudly enough for the staff to hear as he dialed Gu Yueshan’s number.
“You!” Xu Peng stood up, furious.
“Director Gu, are you free right now?” Yi Wei asked when Gu Yueshan picked up.
“I’m in the office, but I have a meeting soon. What’s up?” Gu Yueshan asked.
“I think there’s an issue with the recommendation list for the piano students. As your assistant, I want to check it, but the deputy director is too busy drinking tea to grant me access. I figured since you’re not as busy as him, you could set up permissions for me,” Yi Wei said loudly, making sure everyone around could hear.
“Just use my permissions then. Take a good look at the files for me,” Gu Yueshan replied indulgently.
“Thank you, Mr. Gu,” Yi Wei said cheerfully. After hanging up, he turned to the flustered Xu Peng and said, “Director Gu has given me access, so I’ll review everything on his behalf. Now that I have his permissions, I won’t have to trouble you again. When I report back to Director Gu, I’ll be sure to mention that you’re far too busy with your tea to handle anything else.”
Xu Peng’s face turned bright red with anger.
