After leaving Gu Yueshan’s third uncle’s place, Yi Wei and Gu Yueshan headed to visit his fourth uncle.
While sitting in the car, Yi Wei remarked, “Your fourth uncle is really good with words. If I hadn’t learned about his past, it would be hard to tell what kind of person he really is.”
Gu Yueshan smiled, “Being good with words is both a skill and a form of strength. He was my grandfather’s favorite son and was once the most likely to inherit the Gu family’s business.”
“But in the end, your grandfather chose you to inherit everything. So, does that mean your grandfather liked you more?” Yi Wei asked.
“I was raised directly by my grandfather, and he knew that my two uncles combined weren’t as capable as I was. So, when it came to choosing between his sons and grandson, he picked the most suitable one. Even after the kidnapping, he didn’t change his mind about me inheriting the family business.”
“So, does that mean your third uncle is the most likely suspect behind your kidnapping? After all, he was the one most likely to inherit the business, and you, his nephew, took that chance away,” Yi Wei speculated.
“He could be, but we can’t be sure,” Gu Yueshan replied.
“That’s as good as saying nothing,” Yi Wei sighed, resting his head on Gu Yueshan’s shoulder.
When they arrived at Gu Yueshan’s fourth uncle’s house, there were significantly fewer people than at his third uncle’s place. His fourth uncle and third uncle were complete opposites in personality. The fourth uncle, Gu Shangqin, was quiet and deeply devoted to his wife, with just one son, one daughter, two grandsons, and a granddaughter. His eldest grandson, Gu Chang, was there waiting for them.
Although Gu Shangqin was quieter than Gu Shangxin, Yi Wei had heard that he was actually more competent in his younger days but was disadvantaged by his lack of eloquence.
Since Gu Shangqin didn’t talk much, most of the conversation was led by his son, with Gu Chang sitting by his side.
Yi Wei observed Gu Chang, noticing how calm he appeared, far more composed than Gu Heng. Gu Chang, who had the support of the elder madam, was once a strong contender to be adopted by Gu Yueshan. While Gu Heng had taken the loss hard and seemed completely deflated, Gu Chang behaved as if nothing had happened.
Yi Wei had quietly observed Gu Chang many times, and each time he confirmed that this calm demeanor was genuine, not an act. Yi Wei concluded that the difference between Gu Heng and Gu Chang was that Gu Heng felt entitled to everything Gu Yueshan had, while Gu Chang had no such expectations. He seemed more interested in earning his wealth through his own abilities, which is why he accepted things so quickly and remained so calm.
Yi Wei thought to himself that while his fourth uncle might also be a suspect in Gu Yueshan’s kidnapping, if it could be proven that he wasn’t involved, Gu Chang might be someone worth working with.
Gu Shangqin liked peace and quiet, so after a brief chat, Gu Yueshan and Yi Wei took their leave. The other relatives and family members had already been given gifts by Gu Yueshan’s team, sparing them the need to visit everyone personally, which would have taken at least three or four days.
Both Gu Yueshan’s third and fourth uncles had offered to move out soon, a gesture that surprised Yi Wei. He worried that once they moved out, it would be even harder for Gu Yueshan to investigate whether either of them was behind his kidnapping. However, Gu Yueshan didn’t seem concerned and simply told them to make their own arrangements, not bothering to stop them, which made Yi Wei think he had something planned.
As Yi Wei pondered this, he reflected on the saying, “You never really know someone’s heart.” Who was really behind the kidnapping? Was it the Ye family, the Xu family, or one of Gu Yueshan’s uncles?
Afterward, Yi Wei resumed entertaining his friends. Since they were all busy and could only stay for a day or two, they couldn’t visit many places, so he just hosted them at the Gu family estate.
Spring was in full bloom, and the gardens of the Gu family were filled with vibrant flowers. Yi Wei took his friends on a tour around the estate, or they would sit together, enjoying the flowers and reminiscing about old times. Time flew by quickly.
“What did you say? Break off the engagement?!” Zhao Zhen couldn’t believe what she was hearing and stared wide-eyed at Yi Xuan.
“This was Gu Heng’s grandmother’s decision, and I agreed to it,” Yi Xuan said calmly.
“You… agreed?!” Zhao Zhen took a deep breath and asked, “Do you know what you’re saying?”
“Mom, I’ve thought it over carefully,” Yi Xuan replied, thinking to himself that he still had his pride. It was Gu Heng who pursued him, yet Gu Heng’s grandmother looked down on him as if he were desperate to marry Gu Heng. He didn’t want to endure this any longer.
“Do you think your father and I don’t matter at all? This is a major decision, and you didn’t even discuss it with me?!” Zhao Zhen was so angry that her hands were shaking. “Your engagement to Gu Heng isn’t just between the two of you; it involves both our families. Do you even understand that?”
Zhao Zhen had never spoken to him like this before, let alone scolded him. Her anger now startled him.
“Yi Xuan, you’ve been too reckless!” Yi Hong also expressed his frustration. “You should have at least come home and talked to us about it first. How could you agree to something like this on your own?”
“I…” Yi Xuan tried to explain, but Zhao Zhen cut him off.
“Yi Xuan, you’ve really disappointed your father and me. We’ve always considered what’s best for you, and now you think you’re grown enough to make your own decisions without us? You don’t care about our opinions anymore, do you?” Zhao Zhen’s eyes welled up with tears in her anger.
“No, Mom, I’ve never thought that…” Yi Xuan was flustered and looked to Yi Bo for help.
Although Yi Bo thought that Yi Xuan shouldn’t have made such an important decision without consulting the family, he couldn’t bear to see his brother so lost and helpless. So, he stepped in to say, “Dad, Mom, let’s calm down first and hear what Yi Xuan has to say. He’s not the type to make impulsive decisions without considering the family.”
“No matter the reason, you’re coming with me to the Gu family right now,” Zhao Zhen declared firmly. “Your father and I will not agree to this engagement being called off so easily.”
Yi Xuan didn’t have a chance to explain further before he was hurriedly taken to the Gu family, with Yi Bo also following.
Two days later, after Yi Wei saw his friends off, he and Gu Yueshan left for their honeymoon. They took their baby and chose a peaceful mountain resort within the country to stay for a while.
During their honeymoon, Yi Wei found out that Gu Heng and Yi Xuan had indeed called off their engagement, which surprised him.
Before he and Gu Yueshan had left the Gu family estate, Yi Wei knew that the Yi family had rushed over to discuss the matter with the elder madam and Jiang Shuqin. He thought for sure that the Yi family and Gu Heng wouldn’t agree to the engagement being broken off, but just a few days later, it had actually happened.
“Gu Heng and Yi Xuan broke off their engagement,” Yi Wei said, looking at his phone. He turned to Gu Yueshan, “Do you think it’s real or fake?”
“It’s real,” Gu Yueshan replied, holding the baby.
“They actually did it… Do you think they did it because they didn’t want to be pressured into getting married and didn’t want to move out of the Gu family? That’s quite the drastic decision,” Yi Wei mused.
“You don’t need to worry about it,” Gu Yueshan said. “Whether they get married or not, when the time comes, I’ll make sure they move out.”
Yi Wei walked over and sat beside Gu Yueshan, gently touching the baby’s face with a smile. “No matter what tricks they try, none of them can outsmart you.”
Yi Wei hugged Gu Yueshan’s neck and kissed his cheek. “Tonight, you put the baby to sleep, and I’ll go take a bath.”
The bath was already drawn, so Yi Wei walked into the bathroom, took off his robe, and climbed into the wooden tub, reclining comfortably.
Yi Wei sighed contentedly, rolling his neck to relax, then sank deeper into the water, letting the warmth wash away his fatigue. He hadn’t expected Gu Heng and Yi Xuan to actually call off their engagement. He would figure out the reasons behind it when he returned, but it wasn’t really important to him. He’d just treat it as a funny story to listen to. Whatever happened to Gu Heng and Yi Xuan’s relationship in this life didn’t concern him, but he would never forget the grudges from his past life.
“Is the baby asleep?” Yi Wei asked with his eyes closed.
“He’s asleep,” Gu Yueshan replied, shutting the bathroom door and walking around the screen to the side of the tub.
Yi Wei opened his eyes and looked at him. “What are you doing? Are you going to act like a gangster again?”
Gu Yueshan gently lifted Yi Wei’s chin with his fingers, his eyes darkening.
“Is it you?” Yi Wei froze for a moment, suddenly nervous. “When did you get here?”
“Don’t you want to see me?” Gu Yueshan asked, staring at Yi Wei.
“Of course not,” Yi Wei quickly denied.
“I’m here to spend our honeymoon with you. Aren’t you happy to see me?”
“I’m happy,” Yi Wei replied, but his breathing became increasingly rapid as he grew more nervous.
“Then show me how happy you are,” Gu Yueshan murmured, leaning down.
…
The next morning, Yi Wei found the sunlight too bright and turned over, wanting to bury his face in the pillow. But as soon as he moved, he jolted awake.
Remembering what had happened the night before, Yi Wei slowly turned his head. Seeing Gu Yueshan still asleep, he quietly propped himself up on one elbow, watching Gu Yueshan’s face. He couldn’t help but think, *This man is so handsome,* while nervously waiting for him to wake up.
Gu Yueshan opened his eyes and looked at Yi Wei.
Yi Wei tilted his head, watching him for a while before finally burying his face in Gu Yueshan’s chest. “You’ve changed back?”
“You seem a little disappointed,” Gu Yueshan teased. “Do you prefer me the way I was last night?”
“You… you…” Yi Wei wanted to scold him but didn’t know what to say. Frustrated, he smacked Gu Yueshan and fumed, “You’re all just bullying me! None of you care about me!”
Yi Wei tried to get out of bed, but Gu Yueshan quickly sat up and pulled him back. “I was just joking. Don’t be mad.”
“Hmph!” Yi Wei huffed. “Last night, he did that to me… and I couldn’t bear it, so I said those things. Now, you’re pressuring me again.”
“But didn’t you enjoy it last night?” Gu Yueshan asked, gazing down at him. “That’s why I asked if you wanted me to be like that again.”
Yi Wei glared at him sideways.
“Of course, I can tell that you prefer me to show up like now,” Gu Yueshan said, coaxing him. “It’s our honeymoon—don’t be angry, okay?”
“No!” Yi Wei pushed him away and quickly got out of bed. But as soon as his feet hit the ground, his legs gave out, and he sat back down. Gu Yueshan tried to help him, but Yi Wei angrily swatted his hand away, stood up by holding on to the edge of the bed, and grabbed a pillow, hurling it at Gu Yueshan as he fumed, “This is for tormenting me last night and making me mad today!”
Yi Wei was tired yesterday and hadn’t had breakfast yet, so he couldn’t use his strength at all. Gu Yueshan lay down Then let him hit him with a pillow to vent his anger.
The only person who dared to “fight” with Gu Yueshan and “win” was Yi Wei.
