After Yi Wei arrived, he went straight from the airport to the competition venue at the Aitsetesburg Psychology Association. When the bodyguard opened the car door, Yi Wei got out, looked up at the grand and classical building in front of him, and then began walking up the steps with his entourage.
Deng Song, acting as Yi Wei’s assistant for this trip, accompanied him into the association’s main hall. Deng Song took the documents to handle Yi Wei’s registration while Yi Wei sat on a sofa in the lobby, messaging Gu Yueshan and his adoptive mother to let them know he had arrived safely. He had already called them when he landed.
Thanks to Mi Xue’s letter of recommendation, the registration process went smoothly, and about ten minutes later, Deng Song returned with a keycard.
“Young Master Yi Wei, this keycard will be used for your accommodation and during the competition, so please make sure to keep it safe,” Deng Song said.
Yi Wei glanced at the keycard and replied, “I understand. From here, I’ll go in by myself. You and the others can head to the hotel to rest. I’ll contact you if I need anything.”
“Understood,” Deng Song replied. He didn’t leave immediately, though, instead waiting until Yi Wei had entered the building before he took the rest of the team to the nearby hotel.
Yi Wei looked at the map on the wall and walked toward the administration office to complete his check-in.
Upon entering the administration office, Yi Wei approached the counter and handed over his keycard. After a brief wait, the staff handed him back the keycard, along with a room key and a participant’s pass, and placed a check-in agreement in front of him to sign.
Yi Wei glanced at the pass and noticed it marked him for District D, causing him to pause. He then asked in a foreign language, “My recommender told me I should be assigned to District A. Could there be a mistake?”
The staff member responded, “The keycard information shows you’re assigned to District D.”
Yi Wei frowned. The difference between District A and District D was significant, not just in terms of accommodation but also the competition’s grouping. He took out his phone to call and clarify the situation.
“Yi Wei, long time no see,” a familiar voice interrupted him just as he was about to make the call. Yi Wei turned to see Qi Ran approaching with several people, including Yi Xuan, following behind him.
“I heard you were coming, so I asked my senior to look into it. Seems like you’ve been assigned to District D?” Qi Ran said. “Since you were recommended by Madam Mi Xue, you should’ve been placed in District A. However, although her reputation remains, times have changed. She hasn’t been active for years, and there’s been no recent work of hers recorded by the association. So, it’s not surprising that you were placed in District D.”
Yi Wei picked up on a crucial detail. “Your senior? Who might that be?”
“My senior, Gale, is in charge of assigning participants to their districts,” Qi Ran said with a smile. “By the way, several of the competition’s supervisors are my teacher’s students, and my teacher is one of the main judges.”
Yi Wei looked at him and said, “So, you’re saying the entire association is under your control, and I’m just here to participate quietly, right? After all, I offended you before, and with your personality, you wouldn’t pass up a chance for revenge, would you?”
“It’s not that serious. I’m not as bad as you think,” Qi Ran sighed. “Yes, I was upset before, but I never really intended to do anything to you. Besides, I wouldn’t want to cross Mr. Gu. Otherwise, how could I return to China in the future?”
Actually, Qi Ran had learned from Yi Xuan about Gu Heng and his grandmother’s plan. After considering the situation, Qi Ran felt that Gu Heng’s grandmother had a better chance of success, since she was Mr. Gu’s biological mother. Moreover, there were rumors that Mr. Gu favored the woman at the Linjiang mansion. Yi Wei’s marriage to Gu Yueshan might not last as long as people thought.
“So, after all that, what exactly are you trying to say?” Yi Wei asked.
Qi Ran stepped closer and whispered, “I just asked my senior to help move you to District B. You can use your keycard to check in again.”
Yi Wei looked at Qi Ran with a faint smile.
“What’s wrong?” Qi Ran was puzzled by Yi Wei’s expression. “Don’t you believe me? I have no reason to lie to you, and I couldn’t even if I wanted to. Why don’t you try it and see for yourself?”
Yi Wei remained unmoved and silent, simply staring at him.
Sighing in frustration, Qi Ran said, “If you don’t want to accept my kindness, then so be it. But other people need to check in as well. Could you step aside?”
“What’s the rush?” Yi Wei asked calmly.
“I’ve already said, others need to check in. If you waste their time, it would be unreasonable. I could call security to make you look bad, but don’t think I’m doing this just to get back at you.”
“Yi Wei.”
Yi Wei turned toward the voice, smiling as he saw a familiar face approaching. “Uncle Aite.”
“Sorry I’m late. Traffic was terrible. Have you completed your check-in?” Aite asked.
“My mom told me I was supposed to be placed in District A, but the staff said my information lists me in District D,” Yi Wei explained, showing Aite the pass and check-in agreement. “Uncle Aite, could you help me find out what’s going on?”
Aite took the items from Yi Wei and handed them to his assistant. “Go find out what’s going on.”
Qi Ran was stunned. He had never expected Aite to show up, and even more shocking was the fact that Yi Wei called him Uncle.
“Come on, I’ll introduce you to some people in the association,” Aite said.
“Alright,” Yi Wei nodded, then turned to Qi Ran, placing a hand on his shoulder and whispering, “You really thought you had the upper hand this time, didn’t you? Maybe you would’ve won against someone else, but not me. My mother may not be here, and her friends and students might not be around either, but she would never let anyone bully me.”
Qi Ran clenched his fist, eyes closed, taking a deep breath.
Yi Wei patted his shoulder and said, “Let’s face off during the competition, fair and square.”
After Yi Wei left, Yi Xuan asked, “Brother Qi, who was that man Yi Wei just called Uncle?”
“Aite Byronson, a high-ranking official in this country. All the associations here fall under his jurisdiction,” Qi Ran replied with a bitter expression.
“Yi Wei just called him Uncle, but I’ve never heard of Yi Wei having such a relative,” Yi Xuan said.
“If even you didn’t know, how could I?” Qi Ran thought to himself. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have done any of this.”
“So, does this mean my district change is out of the question?” Yi Xuan asked, disappointed.
“It’s not about the district anymore. I’ve caused trouble for my senior,” Qi Ran muttered as he hurried off.
“Brother Qi…” Yi Xuan was left standing there, unsure what to do.
Yi Wei’s adoptive father, Berger Miller, had severed ties with his family when he was young, refusing an arranged marriage and moving to another country. He changed his name and built a life with Mi Xue, never returning to his homeland or reclaiming his original surname. Aite, Berger’s younger brother, had remained close to him, and even after Berger’s death, he continued to keep in contact with Yi Wei. When Yi Wei came for the competition, Mi Xue asked Aite to look out for him, knowing that the competition was being held on the turf of one of her longtime rivals.
Yi Wei was supposed to be placed in District A, as Mi Xue’s recommendation should have granted him that position, given her achievements and influence. However, Qi Ran had planned to switch Yi Wei and Yi Xuan’s districts as an act of revenge and to further manipulate Yi Xuan. Signing the agreement would have locked in the district change, and Qi Ran’s senior, the association president’s son, would ensure no consequences.
But what Qi Ran hadn’t anticipated was Aite’s unexpected intervention. With Aite on Yi Wei’s side, even the association’s president would have to treat Yi Wei with respect, and Qi Ran’s teacher wouldn’t dare make any trouble.
When the president heard that Aite had arrived, he quickly came out to greet him.
“Mr. Byronson, is there some official business you’re here for today?” the president asked.
“Nothing official. I’m just here to introduce someone to you,” Aite replied.
“Introduce someone?” the president asked, puzzled.
“This is my nephew, Yi Wei. He’s here to compete in this event. His recommender is my brother’s wife, Mi Xue Miller,” Aite said, looking at the president.
The president was momentarily overwhelmed by the information. Staring at Yi Wei for a moment, he finally managed to say, “So, this is the participant recommended by Madam Mi Xue… and he’s also Mr. Byronson’s nephew?”
Aite nodded, then added, “He told me that he was supposed to be placed in District A, but his information shows District D.”
The president was startled and quickly replied, “There must have been some kind of mistake. I’ll have someone look into it right away. Rest assured, I’ll make sure this matter is resolved.”
With Aite personally escorting Yi Wei to meet the president and declaring Yi Wei as his nephew, there was no way anyone could dare make things difficult for him, even if this was enemy territory.
After returning to his room, Yi Wei called Gu Yueshan and chatted for about half an hour before heading to the bathroom to freshen up. Only participants in District A had single suites. Had he stayed in District D, he would have been sharing a room with four other people.
As Yi Wei came out of the bathroom, the doorbell rang. He glanced at the monitor and opened the door, asking, “What do you want?”
“Can I talk to you for a bit?” Yi Xuan asked.
“Come in,” Yi Wei said, turning back toward the living room. After sitting down on the sofa, he asked, “What do you want to talk about?”
Yi Xuan sat across from Yi Wei and looked at him. “I’m honestly curious—are you happy after marrying Mr. Gu?”
“Very happy,” Yi Wei replied.
“He has someone else on the side. Are you really not bothered by that?” Yi Xuan asked seriously.
“No, not at all,” Yi Wei said, shaking his head. Why would I be bothered by myself? he thought.
“If you truly loved Mr. Gu, you wouldn’t be so indifferent. So, the truth is, you don’t love Mr. Gu at all, and you only married him to get back at Gu Heng and me, right?” Yi Xuan pressed. “Tell me the truth. I promise I won’t tell anyone.”
“It’s true that I hate Gu Heng and you and want to get revenge on you both, but the only person I’ll ever truly love is Mr. Gu,” Yi Wei said.
Yi Xuan asked again, “There have been rumors that Mr. Gu has a violent streak. Has he ever been violent with you?”
“No. He’s never even raised his voice at me. When I get mad, I throw tantrums at him, and he always apologizes to me. He’s never been angry with me,” Yi Wei said with a smile.
Yi Xuan lowered his head in thought. Maybe Mr. Gu doesn’t have a violent temper after all. Maybe he was just feeling unwell that day when he accidentally threw me down the stairs…
“This time, I’m definitely going to beat you in the competition!” Yi Xuan declared.
“You probably won’t even face me. Aren’t you in District B? Qi Ran tried to swap my spot in District A with yours, didn’t he? You might not even make it past District B,” Yi Wei said with a smirk.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make it to District A on my own merits,” Yi Xuan replied before standing up and walking out.
In the past few months, Yi Xuan had put aside all personal feelings and focused entirely on his studies. His teacher had praised him for his talent, and he had finally regained the sense of validation and approval he had once longed for. This time, he was determined not to lose to Yi Wei.
