As Yi Wei walked into the room, he pulled out his phone to call Gu Yueshan, but as soon as he entered, he saw Gu Yueshan standing in the living room, holding their child. Yi Wei was both surprised and delighted.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Yi Wei quickly walked over and took the baby into his arms, kissing the little one’s soft, pink cheeks several times. Then, he looked up at Gu Yueshan with a smile.
“I wanted to surprise you,” Gu Yueshan said, gently holding Yi Wei’s face and giving him a soft, tender kiss.
After a long moment, they finally parted. Yi Wei looked at their baby and laughed, saying, “It really is a surprise, right, little one? Are you surprised to see daddy?”
The baby waved his hands and kicked his legs, making little “ah ah” sounds as if responding to Yi Wei.
“Did you miss me too? Daddy missed you so much,” Yi Wei said, gently rocking the baby back and forth. After missing his child for the past few days, holding him now made Yi Wei feel a rush of excitement.
“You probably didn’t eat much at the banquet. Are you hungry?” Gu Yueshan asked, stroking Yi Wei’s face.
“I was a little hungry before, but I feel fine now,” Yi Wei said, looking into his baby’s bright, dark eyes. He felt so full of happiness that even his hunger seemed to disappear.
Gu Yueshan had already ordered food, and not long after, it was delivered to the room.
Yi Wei, still unwilling to let go of the baby, prepared to eat while holding him. Seeing how difficult it was for Yi Wei to manage eating with one hand while holding the baby, Gu Yueshan started feeding him. From time to time, he also gave him sips of soup. This wasn’t the first time Gu Yueshan had fed Yi Wei like this. At home, Yi Wei would occasionally insist on holding the baby during meals, and Gu Yueshan had grown quite accustomed to feeding him in such situations.
“Did you come all this way just to pick me up?” Yi Wei asked. “Or is there work at the company here?”
“I came just to pick you up,” Gu Yueshan replied. “But I’ll also stop by the office to check on things.”
“When are we heading back home?” Yi Wei asked.
“Since I’m here, I’ll visit the company in R Country tomorrow. If there’s nothing important, we’ll head back in a couple of days,” Gu Yueshan said.
Yi Wei nodded.
After dinner and a bath, Yi Wei lay in Gu Yueshan’s arms, holding their child, letting out a contented sigh. Being well-fed, with his baby in his arms and himself nestled in Gu Yueshan’s embrace, Yi Wei couldn’t think of anything more satisfying.
With both Yi Wei and the baby in his arms, Gu Yueshan gently nuzzled Yi Wei’s face and asked, “Did you enjoy the competition?”
“I did,” Yi Wei replied. “It was more enjoyable than I expected. I won pretty easily, and after this competition, I finally understood what my mom had been telling me.”
“What did she say?” Gu Yueshan asked.
Gently patting the sleepy baby, Yi Wei spoke in a soft voice, “Mom told me I have a lot of talent, and that she’s particularly strict when it comes to professional matters. If I didn’t meet her standards for taking on a student, she wouldn’t accept me as her student, even if I am her son. I used to think I would need to wait until after I graduated to have a good chance at winning a competition like this. But Mom had confidence in me and pushed me to compete now. She even showed up to give me pressure because she knew I could win. This competition was her way of helping me realize my own strength and build my confidence. If she didn’t believe I could win, she wouldn’t have let me come to compete on her rival’s turf.”
Gu Yueshan kissed Yi Wei’s cheek and said, “After this competition, your reputation is going to soar, and you’ll probably get busier.”
“The baby’s still too young,” Yi Wei said after kissing the little one on the cheek. “I’ll take on some work to gain experience, but I don’t want to miss any important moments in his life.”
He gently placed the now-sleeping baby beside them, surrounding him with soft pillows for safety, then shifted closer to Gu Yueshan.
Yi Wei wrapped his arms around Gu Yueshan’s neck, and the longing they had felt after several days apart transformed into passionate energy.
…
The next day, Yi Wei and Gu Yueshan went to R Country. Mi Xue returned home for a couple of days, and Yi Wei spent time with some friends. Soon after, they all headed back to their home country.
News of Yi Wei’s victory had already spread. As soon as he returned, he received many invitations, most of which he had Deng Song turn down. However, he accepted a few that he thought could be beneficial for his future.
The academy held an award ceremony for Yi Wei, presenting him with a certificate and a cash prize. While the money didn’t mean much to him, the recognition was a significant honor for a student.
Yi Wei walked up to the stage. After receiving the certificate and prize from the dean, he gave a short speech, to which the students responded with enthusiastic applause.
“I heard that some psychology students from the other academy also competed, but none of them even made it out of the preliminary rounds.”
“That’s nothing. What’s really impressive is that Yi Wei ended the winning streak of Allan Chien—better known as Qi Ran—who had won the last two competitions in a row. I wonder how the psychology department is feeling right about now.”
“Didn’t Allan Chien have a reputation as a rare genius? If Yi Wei beat him, does that mean Yi Wei is even more of a genius?”
“Of course! Think about it—how long has Qi Ran been studying psychology? And how long has Yi Wei been studying it? Isn’t it obvious who’s more talented?”
“This time, the psychology students and graduates got crushed by one of our own. I bet they’ll think twice before looking down on us again.”
After the ceremony ended, the students returned to their classes. Once classes were over, Yi Wei and Sun Qi left the academy together to head back to the Gu family home.
“Your win made the academy leadership really proud,” Sun Qi said with a smile. “Especially since Yi Xuan got eliminated in the B Division and didn’t even make it past the preliminary rounds, while you not only reached the finals but stopped Qi Ran’s winning streak. This victory means a lot to the academy. The psychology students used to have this superior attitude, but I bet they’ve been humbled now.”
“People like that often try to flaunt their sense of superiority, even when they don’t have much to be proud of themselves. They rely on the achievements of others to feel better about themselves, which actually reflects their own subconscious insecurity,” Yi Wei said.
Sun Qi nodded in agreement. “That makes sense. But after such a crushing defeat, I doubt Qi Ran and Yi Xuan will have the guts to come back to the country anytime soon.”
“Not necessarily,” Yi Wei said. “They may be too ashamed to return right away, but to people like them, there are things more important than pride.”
“Like what?” Sun Qi asked.
“Revenge,” Yi Wei said with a slight smile. “They’ll want to restore their dignity by getting back at me.”
Back at the Gu family estate, Yi Wei and Sun Qi headed to the academy for their classes.
Gu Heng noticed Yi Wei walking by and was reminded of Yi Xuan, still in a foreign country, undoubtedly feeling devastated after his loss. Although Gu Heng had tried to comfort him over the phone, he could sense the coldness and distance in Yi Xuan’s tone. He knew Yi Xuan had resolved to focus entirely on his studies, but each time he called, Yi Xuan remained distant, leaving Gu Heng with a strange, hard-to-describe emotion.
Gu Heng’s friend, Qu Feng, walked up to him and asked to borrow his tablet, saying he hadn’t taken complete notes during class and wanted to copy Gu Heng’s.
Still lost in thought about Yi Xuan, Gu Heng absentmindedly handed over his tablet.
As Qu Feng opened the tablet case, a photo fell out.
Yi Wei, who happened to be walking by, glanced down at the picture and froze for a moment when he saw who was in the photo.
Qu Feng was about to pick it up, but Gu Heng quickly snapped back to his senses and grabbed the photo first, shoving it into his pocket.
“Whose photo is that?” Qu Feng asked, having only seen that it was a woman’s picture.
“It’s just a model from a magazine. I must’ve put it there and forgotten about it. Let’s go,” Gu Heng said, quickly walking away.
Yi Wei entered the classroom and focused on his lessons. After class, however, he found himself thinking about the photo that had fallen from Gu Heng’s tablet case. He had seen it clearly—it was a picture of him in women’s clothing. But why was Gu Heng carrying around a photo of him dressed as a woman? Even if Gu Heng wanted to use him as part of some scheme, why would he need to constantly look at the photo? Could it be that…?
Gu Yueshan was going to be back late that night, so Yi Wei invited Sun Qi to stay for dinner at Haitang Garden. He shared the incident with the photo.
“Do you think he might have a thing for you in women’s clothing?” Sun Qi asked, before quickly stuffing his mouth with food.
“I think that might be possible,” Yi Wei mused. “Why else would he carry my photo around like that? I can’t think of any other reason.”
“Maybe you should test him,” Sun Qi suggested.
“That’s a good idea. If he wants to use me, I might as well turn it around on him,” Yi Wei said after some thought.
“Exactly! People like them only learn the pain of their own tricks when those same tricks are used against them,” Sun Qi said before returning to his food.
After dinner, Sun Qi slumped back in his chair, patting his full stomach, too stuffed to move.
“You’ve really been eating a lot lately,” Yi Wei observed. “You know, overeating like this isn’t healthy. You should stop when you’re about 70-80% full.”
“I’ve just been feeling hungry all the time recently, and if I don’t eat, it’s really uncomfortable,” Sun Qi sighed. “But you’re right, I should probably try to control it more. Eating too much is uncomfortable too.”
“You’ve probably stretched your stomach from eating so much all the time, but if you stick to smaller portions for a while…” Yi Wei started, but before he could finish, Sun Qi suddenly covered his mouth and rushed out of the room.
Yi Wei blinked in surprise, quickly placing the baby on the bed and following him.
“What’s wrong?” Yi Wei asked, concerned.
Sun Qi had vomited up everything he had eaten, one hand resting against a pillar for support. He waved off Yi Wei’s worry, saying, “I’m fine. I just overate. I feel a lot better now that it’s out.”
“Come back in and have some water,” Yi Wei said, helping Sun Qi back inside.
Once seated, Sun Qi took the glass of warm water Yi Wei handed him, sipping slowly.
As Yi Wei looked at Sun Qi, a thought suddenly occurred to him. “Are you…an intersex male?”
“No, I’m not,” Sun Qi replied firmly.
“Are you sure?” Yi Wei asked again.
“Of course I’m sure,” Sun Qi said. “You’re not seriously thinking I might be pregnant, are you? That’s impossible. I’m a cisgender male, not an intersex male, so there’s no way I could naturally conceive.”
Seeing Sun Qi’s confident expression, Yi Wei began to think he might be overthinking things, but he still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. “Even so, you should still get checked out. Something isn’t right with you lately. Even if you’re not pregnant, it could be something else, and it’s better to be safe.”
“Alright, I’ll go get checked,” Sun Qi agreed, nodding.
