Yi Wei walked into the living room, glanced at Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong, then sat down.
“What important matter do you want to discuss?” Yi Wei asked, looking at them. “I have other things to do, so let’s skip the unnecessary talk. I don’t need to hear things like ‘we’re your real parents’ or ‘we raised you for four or five years.’ I’ve made everything very clear when you threw me that fake birthday party. I don’t want to waste time repeating myself. If you really want to hear it, I can record it for you so you can listen to it as many times as you want.”
Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong exchanged glances before Zhao Zhen said, “Yi Wei, we’re here to apologize. We were wrong in the past. We shouldn’t have favored Yi Xuan so much and caused you emotional harm. We’re sorry. But deep down, we’ve always loved you. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have brought you back from abroad. Yes, we treated Yi Xuan better, but we didn’t treat you badly either. Favoritism isn’t an unforgivable sin, is it? Do you know how heartbroken I was when you left the birthday banquet that day? I cried all night because, after all, you’re my child.”
“How touching,” Yi Wei replied with sarcasm. “Forcing me to come back in the first place is what brought me the most pain and what I resent you for the most. Honestly, you never intended to bring me back at all. At first, you just wanted to see how I was doing. But after learning that my adoptive mother is from the Mi family, you decided to bring me back, simply because you didn’t want me to end up being a Mi family member. Am I right?”
Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong’s faces stiffened. Yi Wei had hit the nail on the head—they had indeed thought that way back then.
Yi Wei continued, “If I hadn’t married and had a child with Gu Yueshang, you wouldn’t be here trying to apologize to me. If I had left the Yi family without any ties, you would have just waited for me to fall into despair and come crawling back to beg for forgiveness. You wouldn’t have taken the initiative to apologize like you are now. Am I wrong?”
Once again, Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong were left speechless by Yi Wei’s blunt questioning. However, this time they were determined—no matter what it took, they needed Yi Wei’s forgiveness and help for the sake of the Yi family and their company.
“We won’t make any excuses, and we won’t try to defend ourselves,” Zhao Zhen said with teary eyes. “Whether you believe it or not, your father and I have been reflecting on our mistakes and the way we treated you and Yi Xuan. We came here today to ask for your help for the Yi family. We’re bound by blood, and we’re begging for your mercy. We’ll always remember your kindness.”
“Stop trying to play the sympathy card with me. I know exactly what you’re after,” Yi Wei responded coldly. “Even if I don’t want anything to do with you, I’m not ignorant of social norms. I know that if you go around playing the victim and making a sob story, the public opinion will eventually paint me as petty and heartless, and everyone will start pointing fingers at me. Don’t worry—just for the sake of my reputation, I won’t completely abandon the Yi family.”
Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong both sighed in relief. Yi Wei’s words were enough for them. Just this assurance made their visit worthwhile.
Zhao Zhen said a few more words about hoping Yi Wei would visit the family home, but Yi Wei remained silent and didn’t respond.
After they left, Yi Wei let out a cold laugh before returning to his courtyard. As if he cared about what people said about him. As long as his marriage with Gu Yueshang remained intact, it didn’t matter how others judged him behind his back. They would still treat him with respect to his face.
But this was also an opportunity for them to feel the sting of being treated differently. If he outright refused them and dashed all their hopes, their disappointment would be much smaller. But when people hold onto hope, the emotional pain of being treated unfairly stings much harder.
If it were only about what happened after his return to the Yi family, Yi Wei could have let it go. He wouldn’t have taken any action against them—at most, he would have cut ties and kept his distance. But the events from his previous life were real. The suffering he had endured was something he could never forget, no matter what.
When Yi Hong and Zhao Zhen returned home, they were shocked to find the living room in a state of chaos.
“What happened here?” Zhao Zhen shouted. “Where is everyone? Where did they all go?”
The hidden servants heard her voice and rushed out, calling, “Madam.”
“What happened?” Zhao Zhen demanded, looking at them.
“Young Master Yi Bo suddenly went crazy and smashed everything he could get his hands on. We were scared and didn’t dare to stop him, so we hid,” one of the servants explained.
“Where is he now?” Zhao Zhen asked.
“He should be in his room.”
Zhao Zhen and Yi Hong hurried upstairs to Yi Bo’s room, their hearts pounding with anxiety. Yi Bo had never acted like this before. What could have happened to make him so angry and upset?
“Yi Bo, Yi Bo!” Zhao Zhen banged on the door. “Yi Bo, are you in there?”
After calling for a while with no response, Zhao Zhen turned to the servants and asked, “Are you sure Young Master Yi Bo is in his room?”
“We only know that Young Master didn’t leave the house. We’re not certain if he’s in the room,” one of the servants answered.
Yi Hong ordered, “Get some people up here and force the door open.”
Several male servants were called to break the lock on Yi Bo’s door.
When the door finally opened, they found Yi Bo slumped on the floor, clutching a bottle of alcohol and drinking straight from it.
“What’s gotten into you?” Zhao Zhen rushed over, snatching the bottle from his hand. “Did something happen at the company?”
Yi Bo shook his head. “Nothing’s wrong at the company. Leave me alone. I just want to be by myself.”
“What do you mean, ‘leave you alone’? How can we not be worried if you don’t tell us what’s going on?” Zhao Zhen said anxiously.
After confirming that nothing was wrong at the company, Yi Hong called the office to double-check. When he heard that there were no major issues, he relaxed. Then, noticing that Yi Bo was tightly clutching something in his other hand, he signaled Zhao Zhen to take it.
Zhao Zhen pried open Yi Bo’s hand and found a wedding invitation. She was momentarily stunned, then opened it to see that it was from the Wei family.
Zhao Zhen stood up and handed the invitation to Yi Hong. “Wei Nanfeng is getting married. His bride is Yi Wei’s friend, Sun Qi.”
After reading the invitation, Yi Hong frowned at Yi Bo. “What’s going on with you?”
“Yeah, why does their wedding bother you so much?” Zhao Zhen asked. “Does it have anything to do with you?”
Yi Bo had just learned that Sun Qi was marrying Wei Nanfeng and was already pregnant. This news made him feel devastated. When he got home and saw the wedding invitation, he couldn’t hold back any longer and exploded in anger. But no matter how much he vented, the pain in his heart only grew.
“Do you like Sun Qi, Yi Wei’s friend?” Yi Hong asked, staring at Yi Bo.
Yi Bo remained silent.
“Do you really like Sun Qi?” Zhao Zhen asked again, kneeling beside Yi Bo in a panic. “Does Wei Nanfeng know you like him? You can’t cause trouble with the Wei family right now, especially considering the state of our company!”
“Is your gaming company struggling because of Wei Nanfeng?” Yi Hong asked.
Yi Bo kept his head down and said nothing.
“Say something!” Zhao Zhen yelled, hitting him in frustration. “Your father and I practically groveled to get Yi Wei’s forgiveness, and he’s finally agreed to help us. And now you go and make a mess! Your father and I, along with the entire company, are counting on you! Can’t you pull yourself together?”
Zhao Zhen was so furious that her breathing became labored. She clutched her chest, gasping for air.
“Enough,” Yi Hong said, pulling Zhao Zhen to her feet. “Yelling at him won’t help. Let him calm down, and we’ll talk this through later.”
Yi Hong led Zhao Zhen out, leaving Yi Bo alone. Yi Bo clutched his head, struggling with his inner torment.
He knew that he and Sun Qi had no chance anymore. No matter how hard he tried to deny it, the facts were clear. He had thought that as long as Sun Qi and Wei Nanfeng hadn’t made their relationship public, their relationship wasn’t stable, and he still had a chance. But the news of their marriage and Sun Qi’s pregnancy shattered that hope. In that moment, Yi Bo felt that his life would never be happy again.
Yi Bo pounded the floor in frustration, hating himself for being so powerless to change anything.
…
On the day of Wei Nanfeng and Sun Qi’s wedding, Yi Wei and Gu Yueshang got up early and brought their child to the Wei family’s home
.
Yi Wei, carrying his child, entered the room where Sun Qi and Wei Nanfeng were preparing. Sun Qi was already dressed and ready, waiting for the ceremony to start.
“Look, baby, doesn’t Sun Qi-gege look handsome today?” Yi Wei teased.
Sun Qi smiled and took the baby into his arms. “Don’t listen to your dad—he’s just trying to tease me. In a few months, you’ll have a little brother to play with, and you two need to become good friends.”
“Nervous?” Yi Wei asked after sitting down.
“No,” Sun Qi shook his head. “I was a bit anxious and unsure when I first moved in, but now I’ve settled in and gotten used to things. The wedding doesn’t make me nervous at all.”
“That carefree attitude of yours has its perks,” Yi Wei laughed, thinking back to how nervous he had been during his own wedding.
After chatting for a while, Wei Nanfeng came in. Yi Wei took his child and left, giving the couple some time alone.
Though the wedding had been prepared in a rush, it was still grand and elaborate. Many guests attended, and the event was bustling with activity.
Yi Wei returned to Gu Yueshang’s side, handing him the child. Gu Yueshang held their baby expertly, his affectionate gaze surprising many of the guests. In their minds, someone as busy as Gu Yueshang wouldn’t have much time to hold his child, and a man as cold as him wouldn’t show such warmth, even toward his own son.
When Wei Nanfeng and Sun Qi walked out together, the guests made way for them, offering their congratulations. Yi Wei, arm in arm with Gu Yueshang, smiled as he watched them, silently wishing Sun Qi a happy future. In this life, seeing Sun Qi embark on a completely different path of happiness filled Yi Wei’s heart with contentment. He hoped Sun Qi would remain happy forever.
Yi Wei had noticed earlier that Yi Bo hadn’t attended the wedding. In this life, Yi Bo was a complete outsider to Sun Qi’s world. As for how Yi Bo felt now, Yi Wei couldn’t care less. He had his own plans for how he would exact his revenge on Yi Bo and the Yi family.
