PAGBWMH : Chapter 72

The Diplomacy of Spouses

Gu Yueshan was heading to Luocheng for an important gathering that would last several days, and Yi Wei would be joining him with their child. Wei Nanfeng and several of Gu Yueshan’s other friends would also be attending.

The elders of the Gu family hoped that Gu Yueshan would bring along the younger generation, like Gu Heng and Gu Chang, to give them some exposure. Gu Yueshan agreed that it was time for them to make appearances in such circles and decided to bring them along as well.

After checking into their hotel, everyone went to their rooms to change into formal attire in preparation for the first evening’s banquet. Gu Heng, Gu Chang, and the others, after getting dressed, stood outside the room where Gu Yueshan and Yi Wei were staying, waiting. Shortly afterward, the double doors opened, and Gu Yueshan emerged, holding Yi Wei’s hand, with the others following behind them as they headed toward the banquet hall.

Gu Heng, walking behind them, glanced at Gu Yueshan holding Yi Wei’s hand, pondering how long this affectionate scene would last once Mi Wei got pregnant and had the leverage to compete with Yi Wei. If Mi Wei won in the end, would she also be treated the same way by his fourth uncle? Gu Heng found himself momentarily unsure whether he wanted Mi Wei to win or not.

The North-South business gathering brought together many prominent figures, making for an extravagant event.

Yi Wei remained at Gu Yueshan’s side, smiling and greeting people. Most others had also brought their partners along, and Yi Wei wasn’t the only male partner present. “Spouse diplomacy” was equally important, and while Gu Yueshan engaged with the CEOs and board members, Yi Wei was mingling with their spouses.

Beyond the customary pleasantries, the key aspect of these conversations was whether Yi Wei could glean any useful information, either intentionally or inadvertently revealed by the other party.

Yi Wei carried himself with poise, seamlessly engaging with people, even those much older than him, without any signs of discomfort or unease. Whether it was the Gu family members or their in-laws observing from afar, they had to admit that Yi Wei’s conversational skills and demeanor were impeccable. Those who spoke with him seemed relaxed and genuinely happy.

Gu Chang whispered to Gu Heng, “I’ve always thought that Yi Wei would be too good for you. Now I’m even more convinced. With his abilities and personal qualities, he’s clearly a better match for our fourth uncle.”

Gu Heng shot a sharp glare at Gu Chang and turned away, ignoring him.

Gu Chang smirked and continued, “Yi Xuan may have been a good match for you, but even he seems to have lost interest in you. Probably because he knows you won’t inherit the Gu family’s fortune, so he’s distancing himself to find someone better.”

Feigning calm and indifference to Gu Chang’s remarks, Gu Heng turned to speak with someone else. But in reality, Gu Chang’s words pierced his heart like nails, causing an intense pain. He had never considered that Yi Xuan might have ended their engagement because of his declining chances of inheriting the Gu family business. Yet, based on Yi Xuan’s cold demeanor during their recent phone calls, Gu Heng couldn’t help but wonder if there was truth to it.

Gu Chang, seeing Gu Heng’s reaction, smirked again and turned to converse with others. He truly believed he was right—why else would Yi Xuan suddenly agree to break off the engagement?

As the banquet neared its end, Yi Wei began to feel tired. Gu Yueshan suggested that he return to their room to rest. Since their child was still in the room, Yi Wei decided to head back early.

Once in the room, Yi Wei took a shower and then sent the caretakers off to their own rooms to rest. He played with the baby for a while and, after the baby grew tired and fell asleep, gently placed him in the small crib next to the large bed.

Yi Wei opened another suitcase and took out the two sets of women’s clothing he had brought along, all prepared and coordinated by Sun Qi, complete with makeup products. He had even practiced beforehand. The purpose of bringing these outfits wasn’t for fun, but rather to test Gu Heng. If Gu Heng truly had feelings for him in women’s clothing, Yi Wei might need to adjust his original plan and come up with a new strategy.

As Yi Wei was deep in thought, Gu Yueshan entered the room.

Yi Wei turned toward him and asked, “Is the banquet over?”

“Yes,” Gu Yueshan replied. “I’ve arranged to meet with a few people again tomorrow for a proper discussion.”

Yi Wei smiled, stood on his tiptoes to kiss him on the lips, and then helped him remove his tie and jacket.

As Yi Wei was taking off Gu Yueshan’s suit, Gu Yueshan glanced at the women’s clothing on the sofa and asked, “Are you planning to wear women’s clothing tonight?”

“What are you saying?” Yi Wei blushed slightly at his straightforward question and replied, “I didn’t bring these for you. Now go take a shower.”

“If they’re not for me, then who are they for?” Gu Yueshan asked, frowning slightly.

“For no one. Just go take a shower. I’ll explain after you’re done,” Yi Wei said, pushing him toward the bathroom.

“Let’s shower together,” Gu Yueshan suggested, grabbing Yi Wei’s hand and pulling him toward the bathroom.

“The baby is still out here sleeping,” Yi Wei protested.

“There are guards in the living room. Don’t worry. We’ll leave the door open,” Gu Yueshan said, dragging Yi Wei into the bathroom.

Yi Wei lay on his side in Gu Yueshan’s arms, too exhausted to discuss the women’s clothing or the plans he had been thinking about. Before he could say anything, he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, Gu Yueshan was already awake and preparing to leave for his meeting with the people he had arranged to see the previous night. Yi Wei was still half-asleep.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?” Gu Yueshan asked, sitting by the bed and stroking Yi Wei’s face.

“Not… going,” Yi Wei mumbled, still drowsy.

“When you wake up, make sure you eat properly. You can rest in the room or explore the hotel. Or, if you want, you can come find me,” Gu Yueshan said.

“Mm…” Yi Wei responded, barely registering what he was saying.

Gu Yueshan leaned down to kiss him before getting up and heading out.

After Gu Yueshan left, Yi Wei slept for another hour before finally getting up.

As he was having breakfast, Yi Wei instructed one of the bodyguards to discreetly check on what Gu Heng was up to.

When he finished eating, the bodyguard returned to report that Gu Heng was alone in the hotel’s tea garden, drinking tea and looking quite upset.

After dismissing the bodyguard, Yi Wei began preparing. He chose a retro-style women’s outfit, complete with a hat adorned with a veil that covered a third of his face. This time, he wore contact lenses instead of glasses and applied false eyelashes to make his eyes look rounder.

Once he was ready, Yi Wei stepped out of the room, instructing the head bodyguard to follow at a distance so as not to draw attention.

He took the elevator down and made his way to the tea garden.

The tea garden, located by a lotus pond, was designed for guests to enjoy tea and admire the scenery. It consisted of a long row of rooms, and Gu Heng was in one of them, drinking tea alone.

With a clear goal in mind, Yi Wei walked straight into the room and stood by the door, looking at Gu Heng. Sensing someone had entered, Gu Heng instinctively looked up. When he saw Yi Wei, he froze for a moment before quickly standing up and rushing to close the doors.

While Gu Heng nervously closed the doors, Yi Wei casually walked over and sat down.

Gu Heng, still flustered, glanced at Yi Wei before opening the door slightly to peek outside. After confirming no one was around, he hurried back to sit across from Yi Wei, lowering his voice as he asked, “What are you doing here?!”

Yi Wei took out his tablet and typed: *You were the person I met last time, weren’t you?*

Gu Heng stared at the message, momentarily stunned. The last time they had met, they had been separated by some plants, but his actions just now had essentially confirmed that he recognized her. However, since his grandmother had contacted her several times, and she had agreed to cooperate, it wasn’t strange that he would know her.

Yi Wei typed again: *I saw you last time. The moment I saw you just now, I was sure it was you, so there’s no point in denying it.*

Gu Heng stared at the message, thinking that there was no point in hiding anything now. After all, she had already agreed to cooperate with them. “Why are you here?” he asked.

Yi Wei typed: *I’m here to see Chairman Gu.*

“What are you doing here looking for my fourth uncle? Yi Wei came with him. If you suddenly show up like this, my fourth uncle will definitely be angry,” Gu Heng said.

Yi Wei typed: *Chairman Gu hasn’t been visiting me lately, and I have something to discuss with him. I don’t want to live like this anymore. It’s lonely and scary living all alone in that huge mansion by the river. I want to break up with him and move abroad.*

Gu Heng was stunned for a long moment before saying, “You should think it over carefully. If you’re really determined to leave my fourth uncle, don’t tell him yet. I’ll help you leave.”

Yi Wei put away his tablet and quickly left.

Gu Heng, troubled by what he had just said, rubbed his face vigorously but didn’t get up to chase after her.

As Yi Wei hurried away in high heels, she stumbled on the steps and twisted her ankle. Someone walking by immediately reached out to steady her.

“Are you okay?” the person asked.

Yi Wei looked up to thank them but froze when she saw the man’s face, and he seemed equally surprised.

“Mr. Meng, this way, please,” the person leading the man said.

“Oh, alright,” Meng Yang responded, then turned back to Yi Wei and asked, “Can you walk?”

Yi Wei nodded, bowed slightly in thanks, and continued walking ahead.

Meng Yang turned to glance at Yi Wei again, thinking to himself that she was indeed very beautiful. But something about her gave him an odd feeling. Despite the scent of her makeup, she didn’t quite smell like a woman.

“Mr. Meng?” the person leading him called again.

“Let’s go,” Meng Yang said, continuing on.

As Yi Wei hurried away, he thought to himself that the man called Mr. Meng was likely Sun Qi’s idol, Meng Yang. If only Sun Qi were here, seeing his idol would have made him so happy.

Yi Wei then shifted his thoughts back to his earlier meeting with Gu Heng. His main goal had been to test whether Gu Heng had indeed developed feelings for him in women’s clothing. Based on Gu Heng’s reaction, he was now sure.

If Gu Heng hadn’t fallen for his female disguise, he would have encouraged Yi Wei to stay and fight for his happiness for the sake of their plan. But instead, Gu Heng had offered to help him leave.

Yi Wei knew that once Gu Heng calmed down, he would likely try to persuade him to stay, but that didn’t matter. What Yi Wei had learned today was enough for him to use to his advantage.
