After the morning meeting ended, Gu Yueshan sent someone to invite Yi Wei for lunch, only to find out that Yi Wei had already gone home. Feeling puzzled, he immediately called Yi Wei.
When Yi Wei received Gu Yueshan’s call, he was still on the way back. He told Gu Yueshan that he had remembered something important and decided to return home first, assuring him that there was no need to worry and that he would be waiting for him at home.
After arriving at Gu’s family home, Yi Wei carried the child and quickly walked into Haitang Garden. Once inside, he saw Sun Qi lying on the bed, looking a bit pale.
“How are you feeling?” Yi Wei sat by the bed and asked, “Still feeling uncomfortable?”
“I took a nap, and I’m feeling much better,” Sun Qi sat up, leaning against the headboard. “I never thought my mom would hide something like this from me. Just how much does she want me to be with a woman?”
Intersex individuals can choose to be with either a man or a woman. Some intersex people marry women and live normal lives.
“Let’s not focus on potential obstacles. Just think carefully—do you really want this child?” Yi Wei asked seriously.
“Yes,” Sun Qi answered without hesitation. “I want this child. Even if it disrupts all the plans I’ve made, I don’t have a single thought of not wanting this child. I can’t describe the feeling—it’s like, no matter what, I must protect him. I absolutely can’t let him get hurt.”
“As long as you want this child and are determined to have him, then all other issues are trivial,” Yi Wei began analyzing. “Because Mr. Wei (Wei Nanfeng) definitely wants this child too. Once he knows you’re pregnant, he’ll definitely marry you right away. So there’s no issue between the two of you. As for your education, a delay isn’t ideal, but it’s not a real problem. The main issue now is your family’s attitude. Are your parents really against you being with a man? Tell me more about how they usually act and their attitudes. The more we understand, the better we can deal with it.”
Sun Qi slowly recalled how his parents reacted to his romantic choices and started explaining everything to Yi Wei.
Yi Wei listened attentively, asking detailed questions here and there. After about 20-30 minutes, he finally said, “So, your dad seems to be okay with your choices in love. As long as you’re happy and the other person isn’t someone completely unpresentable, he seems fine with it.”
“My dad did say that the most important thing is whether I like the person,” Sun Qi confirmed.
“So the only potential obstacle is your mom’s attitude. But from what you’ve described, it doesn’t seem like she’s outright opposed to you being with a man. The fact that she’s trying to probe whether your partner is male or female doesn’t necessarily mean she’s against it. When she told you to always use protection, even though she was subtle, if you think about it, there’s also an underlying message of her wanting you to take care of yourself, meaning she might be okay if your partner is a man.”
“Is that really the case?” Sun Qi seriously replayed his mother’s words in his mind.
“You probably assumed from the start that your mother didn’t want you to be with a man, so you misunderstood her words,” Yi Wei explained. “I think you should talk to her openly. Bring Mr. Wei with you when you visit home. Let him talk to your dad, and you talk to your mom. Then, together, you can discuss the next steps.”
Sun Qi nodded.
As the time for Gu Yueshan’s meeting to end approached, Yi Wei called Wei Nanfeng.
Wei Nanfeng, who was chatting with Gu Yueshan, took out his phone, saw Yi Wei’s name, and hesitated for a moment before turning the screen towards Gu Yueshan. “Your wife is calling me.”
Gu Yueshan gave him a nod to signal that he should take the call.
After Wei Nanfeng answered the phone, Yi Wei informed him that Sun Qi was sick and resting in Haitang Garden at the Gu family home, asking him to come as soon as possible to check on him.
After hanging up, Wei Nanfeng briefly updated Gu Yueshan, then quickly left to return to the Gu family home. Gu Yueshan went with him.
By the time they arrived back at the Gu residence, it was already quite late. Yi Wei saw Wei Nanfeng walking quickly into the house and picked up the already-sleeping child to give the two some privacy to talk.
Gu Yueshan took the child from Yi Wei, and the two of them returned to their own courtyard.
When Gu Yueshan learned that Sun Qi was pregnant, he was momentarily surprised, then felt joy for Wei Nanfeng, who was going to become a father and finally get married.
Previously, Sun Qi had wanted to keep their relationship a secret, and Wei Nanfeng had gone along with it. But now that a child was involved, Wei Nanfeng certainly wouldn’t agree to keeping it hidden any longer. And Sun Qi no longer planned to keep things under wraps. He had made up his mind that, whether his family agreed or not, he would go public with his relationship with Wei Nanfeng and get married as soon as possible.
Yi Wei leaned against Gu Yueshan’s chest, saying, “Sun Qi is pregnant, so he and Mr. Wei will definitely get married soon. Once their baby is born, it won’t be much younger than ours. Our child will have a companion growing up.”
“Hmm,” Gu Yueshan responded, kissing Yi Wei’s forehead.
“I just don’t know how his family will react. Even though I feel that his parents won’t strongly oppose it, and they might not be as against him marrying a man as Sun Qi thinks, I’ve never interacted with his parents before. I can’t be 100% sure about his mother’s thoughts just from what Sun Qi described,” Yi Wei sighed. “I just hope everything goes smoothly for them.”
“Don’t worry. Whatever the situation or problem, Nanfeng will handle it,” Gu Yueshan reassured him.
Yi Wei nodded.
Wei Nanfeng, thrilled and surprised by the news of becoming a father, was so excited that he wanted to take Sun Qi home immediately. But after Sun Qi reminded him of the late hour, he decided to stay the night at the Gu residence and visit Sun Qi’s parents the next day.
The following day, Wei Nanfeng and Sun Qi went to visit his parents.
While waiting for updates, Yi Wei continued with his studies and classes as usual.
After finishing his lessons at the Gu family school, Yi Wei glanced at the date, packed up his things, and prepared to go to the school’s management office.
As he was walking through the hall, someone called out to him.
“Yi Wei-ge!”
Yi Wei thought it was one of the Mi family kids calling him, but when he turned around, he saw it was some of the Yi family children walking towards him.
“What’s up?” Yi Wei asked, looking at them.
“Yi Wei-ge, my parents want to invite you to dinner. Are you available soon?” Yi Le asked, looking at Yi Wei.
“Invite me to dinner?” Yi Wei said, feeling a bit perplexed. “Why would your parents invite me to dinner? I’m not even that close to them.”
Yi Le’s father was Yi Wei’s cousin, but Yi Wei wasn’t close to him at all. He had barely spoken a few words to him, so Yi Wei’s blunt response made the situation a little awkward for Yi Le and the others.
The Yi family relatives were all aware that Yi Wei’s adoptive parents favored Yi Xuan, and Yi Bo, the official heir, saw Yi Xuan as his true brother while being quite hostile towards Yi Wei. When Yi Wei first returned to the Yi family as an adopted son, he endured plenty of ridicule and cold remarks from them. After it was revealed that Yi Wei was actually the biological son, they stopped making snide comments, but their attitude, from the adults down to the children, still wasn’t particularly friendly.
“My parents said there’s something important they want to discuss with you,” Yi Le said. “I’m just passing along the message.”
Yi Wei sneered inwardly. He didn’t need to go to dinner to know what this “important” matter was.
“Tell them I’m busy,” Yi Wei said flatly before walking out. Just as he reached the door, he ran into the Mi family children who were coming in.
“Yi Wei-ge,” Mi Cheng smiled at Yi Wei. “Are you going home today?”
“Not today,” Yi Wei replied. “Tell my mom I’ll be home the day after tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Mi Cheng nodded.
After watching Yi Wei leave, the Mi family children continued inside, coincidentally crossing paths with the Yi family kids. Since they couldn’t argue or quarrel in this space—whoever started it would be blamed—both groups exchanged glares for a moment before moving on.
Yi Wei arrived at the management office of the Gu family school. The staff quickly found the files Yi Wei was looking for and made space for him to sit.
Xu Peng, passing by from his office, paused when he saw Yi Wei, then continued walking forward.
Every now and then, Yi Wei would come to the school’s management office and, using Gu Yueshan’s authority, review the academic and performance records of the students. He would then use his connections abroad to select suitable students for short- or long-term study or internship opportunities, helping them gain more experience in learning and work.
Yi Wei’s recommendations were often even better than those from the school or its foundation, making the students all the more eager to be included on his list.
When making his selections, Yi Wei considered many factors, but he always excluded anyone from the Yi family, no matter how suitable they might be. So he knew immediately why his cousin had suddenly invited him to dinner. Since Yi Xuan and Gu Heng’s engagement was broken off and Yi Wei had married Gu Yueshan and had a child, solidifying his position in the Gu family, these people, ever the opportunists, were probably trying to curry favor with him, hoping he’d look after the Yi family kids. But Yi Wei wasn’t one to forget past grievances, so there was no way he’d be kind to them.
When Yi Wei’s recommendation list was published, as expected, there were no Yi family names on it.
That night, the Yi family hall was filled with people.
“Brother, Sister-in-law, we’ve already explained the situation. Now, what do you two have to say?”
“What do you expect us to say?” Zhao Zhen replied. “You all know Yi Wei’s attitude. What’s the point of talking to us about it?”
“You’re his biological parents. You can’t just let the Mi family reap all the benefits, can you? Even if not for us, you should at least think about the company and find a way to mend your relationship with Yi Wei.”
“Exactly, Brother, Sister-in-law. Now isn’t the time to care about pride. When it’s time to back down, you back down. And backing down to your own child isn’t something to be ashamed of.”
“Just think of it as Yi Wei being mad at you. Just go and appease him.”
“Yeah, whatever it takes, just try it. After all, he’s your flesh and blood. Can he really be so cold-hearted as to ignore you both? Even if he doesn’t want anything to do with this family, he still has to care about his reputation. Wouldn’t people gossip if they found out he’s heartless toward his own parents? That wouldn’t sound too good, would it?”
“He’s still young and might not think about things that far ahead. As his parents, it’s your job to remind him.”
They continued chiming in with their thoughts. Yi Hong and Zhao Zhen remained silent throughout, but everything they were hearing was sinking in.
